The current Phoenix has an article on Michael Semple, one of the two men recently expelled from Afghanistan, saying that Semple (described by an article in the Times of London

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article3107632.ece

as a "political officer") were being paid from Ireland's aid budget through Tom Kitt.

    My jaw dropped.

Apart from anything else, I'm astonished at the deafening silence in the Dail, if this is correct. Why are questions not being asked?

The Phoenix is a fun read, as is a good novel.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

There are two other articles in the current issue about things whose background I know. Both are accurate.
