Try and get somewhere close to college. I'm doing a postgrad and I had never been to Galway before I started so I ended up a 15-20 minute walk from college in Rahoon, where a lot of student stay it seems. It worked out well for me because I'm half way between where I teach and college but definitely look for somewhere near college. I can't really help with areas because I still haven't managed to master any place names in Galway.

Rahoon area is grand if you don't mind walking in the rain to college for 20 minutes, and if you have a car you'll be grand, if you can manage to get parking in college.

You could also try e-mailing the NUIG accommodation office but I'd say you'd get a better response here to be honest considering the place they recommended I stay in.

Take a look at Dún Na Coirbe, it's about a 10min walk from town and about the same to the college.

No problem with the younger crowd but I´m a bit old to be setting back into that and dont want to feel like a granny in the corner!

All years live in student accomodation.

1st years - Generally stay in coiribe village. Definatly not the place for you. Mostly about partying there.
2nd & 3rd years - Generally Cuirt na corrib or gort na corrib
Or - Get non-student accomodation near the college (some 2nd years, mostly 3rd years).
4th years - Im not sure about 4th years, im only in 3rd year myself, but i guess its something like 3rd years, most get there own house and some stay with student accomodation.

At this stage in the year you would be luck to get a student accomodation place (for next september im assuming) as there usually filled up in january or early february.

When are you starting college? Im guessing september

Does anyone know if second years are allowed to stay in Corrib? I'm there now (1st year) and don't see myself growing up next year :) Also (and primarily) my lectures are in Cairnes so it's a good 10-15min closer than other accommodation.

i'm starting first year next year and kinda need to book some accommodation now to get it out of the way before summer, i recall when i was looking last year practically everywhere said "no first years".

i'm not too late for student accommodation and too early for everything else am i?

and what're they like on things such as letting people stay over for a night in the apartments like?

letting people stay over depend from place to place and the security people working that night. most places let you sign people in, but you can easily sneak people in too

AFAIK most student accommodation doesn't allow it. I know Corrib don't, and some people I know recently had to pay an €800 fine or something after Management raided the place one morning and found 5 or 6 guests staying there (the rest of the fine was for damage + fire extinguisher). It's a bit of a piss take really; you're paying to rent the place... as long as there's no damage it should be okay to have people stay.

1st year stay in corrib village, any other year it has to be an apartment in town. Why pay loads for those ****ty student accoms like the coiribe'b when it is cheaper and nicer elsewhere, with a better location.

Also, I always let people stay over in corrib village no problem, just have to sneak them in...

so really i should just book a single ensuite in corrib now?

I know when i booked my accomodation it was in May. I ended up with a single ensuite in cuirt na coiribe. Did me grand, coiribe village wouldnt of been my scene. Get on to them soon though, places seem to get booked up fairly quickly the past few years.
Ive only ever heard of 1st years staying in student accomodation, or digs. Never really heard of anyone staying in an apartment or house in 1st year.

I agree. Anytime my dad has given me the car for a week I've just walked to college. It's not worth the hassle of trying to find parking.

duly noted...will leave car at home
