True.......McAfee is impossible to remove once activated

    McAfee sucks

Hi they do have a removal tool that works quite well.

But as mention above use other antivirus when possible.

With the advantage of a 1 year free sub what harm is there in leaving it on the PC after that? It wont affect performance will it?

I had the inconvenience of getting a trial version of Norton on my Sony Laptop... removed it on day 1, well... tried my best to! It wasnt properly installed so didnt even have an uninstaller but my system was still plagued with it!

I was happily using free AVG which I used on my last laptop only to discover that it was required to be running McAfee to connect to the college network...

So now my laptop shall be plagued by both Norton and McAfee!!!

i could be wrong but i felt that performance was impaired somewhat.

for example, i should be able to refuse all outbound connections with McAfee firewall, but McAfee antivirus was able to make outbound connections at will.
presumably reporting the fact that the trial period was approaching expiration.

i require my firewall to block everything, even applications by the same company as the firewall

but my main gripe with McAfee internet security suite was that after the trial period had expired, i was unable to uninstall the program.

This was a few years ago and maybe they have cleaned up their act a bit, but the general concensus here seems to agree that its a lifetime relationship.

I posted this in the anti-virus thread, but thought it was worth repeating here...

Last year CNet News did an article on anti-virus/security software firms that were not only tracking their users but putting back doors in their software to allow American authorities to access their clients PC's.

McAfee was one of the companies that supported this, and had no comment on the allegations.

Install McAfee - that way the bush administration, the RIAA, and the MPAA will have direct access to your hard drive to see what you have been up to.

I suppose the next forum you post this in will be conspiracy theories ;)

Mcafee is like an annoying 4 year old, it just asks you questions all day and never shuts up!

Few problems with the software itself but the ar*ewipes are charging me to renew an old subscription and seem to be completely ignoring my e-mails and the phone number they give for Ireland (02079490107) doesn't work. If you'd asked me a few days ago I would've said they were grand, now it looks like I'm going to have to cancel my credit card and get a new one issued just to stop them charging me €50 per annum for a second subscription when the computer it was for is long since kaputt.

If you cancel your subscription in 30days a full refund will be issued, but the unsaid bit seems to be yeah, like you've a hope in hell of getting through to someone who can help in 30days!

Mcafee and Norton offer full refund within a certain amount of time after you sub, One reason I found out why they do, is that your machine is not certain to boot up after installing this bloatware.

Get the free version of AVG and Zonealarm.
