    Hi,

I Have A 4 Month Old Boxer And I Am Concerned About Her Tail.

Her Tail Looks Too Long After It Was Cropped.

Is There A Recommended Lenght Of Tail?

    Can I Get Her Tail - Re-cropped?

    Any Suggestions Would Help.

    Thanks,

    Rob

Yes, there is ...it's called "full natural length"

agreed. I think tail cropping should be banned personally. I'm sure it must mess with the body language of a dog meeting another dog since they express so much through their tail.....

I think you should leave your dog's tail alone, if it is ''too long'' she is lucky because at least she'll be able to use it a bit hopefully!

You would be hard pushed to find a vet in this country to dock a dogs tail for cosmetic reasons, so all of the breeders are doing it themselves with a pair of scissors... is it any surprise that some of them are being botched? Just leave it alone, the poor dog has had it chopped already, don't make her go through it again because it doesn't look short enough.

my god that's sickening, I know some of them put rings on their tails like what they do to lambs.

First of all leave your dog alone, if you thought your fingers were too long would you cut them down? No. Why is it OK to do it to your dog?

Second, Please Learn To Use Capital Letters Properly which means typing like this.

I think my wife's neck is too long, I wonder should I cut it :D

OP leave the poor thing alone.

Apologies to alla who I have offended! I did not mean to offend anybody. I am new to this and I was curious about my Bixer's tail. Apologies once again!!

the veterinary council has recently branded all tail docking for cosmetic reasons as mutilation. any vet found practising such will seemingly be struck from the veterinary register. there has been no change to the actual law on tail docking.
this means that more breeders will do it themselves with no anaesthetic and unsterile equipment.
it also means that the IKC needs to make a stand and publish an official statement on their policies regarding tail docking and the registration of certain breeds.
op, to have your dogs tail re-done at this age, it would require a general anaesthetic. the vertebra in the tail are an extension of the spine - how would you like to have yours severed?

i adoped a boxer pup 2 weeks ago that has a cropped tail, the poor animals tail was infected and caused a serious skin condition. Anyone who does these things should be jailed. However lay off the first person as they didnt crop the tail and probably didnt realise the damage it can cause

actionman, if the OP wasn't aware of what amputation involved then they should have researched the topic properly before even considering having it done to their dog a second time. i wouldn't even use a worm tablet on my cat without researching it first, never mind sending them for needless surgery.

Yes it is too late to make it shorter at this time. The tail should be well healed by now. A few days after the cropping and all should be sorted and you have a fine looking dog. As for your apoligies , dont mind what the others are mouthing on about . Blah Blah ...

Hey summer i understand where your coming from but that is why they posted the message they were trying to find out more info and doubt they'll be touching the tail now.Trust me their are some people out their who even think boxers are born with short tails!!!!!!!!

i know, some people have absolutely no knowledge of dogs. its that which annoys me more than the actual docking issue. it is very frustrating havin to deal day in day out with people who don't know a thing about the animals in their care.

eg, a couple of weeks ago, it was a tuesday evening, a woman brought a cairn terrier into our clinic. the dog had been involved in an rta on the previous friday. the owner had had a wedding to go to on the saturday and so decided not to bring the dog in til after the weekend. the terrier had lost about 60% of the skin off its belly which was now badly infected. his penis was deeply torn along the side. he had three fractured ribs.
when i initially asked her why she had taken so long to bring him in she said - and i quote "well he walked in off the road himself so i knew he was ok. and i just couldn't come on saturady because it was my cousins best friends wedding, and sure, westies are really hardy, they don't even feel pain do they because they come from the mountains? and i didn't think you would be open on mondays. to be honest, i didn't think he needed the vets at all, but today i could hardly eat my dinner because of the smell."

i don't think i need to point out how much is wrong with that, and unfortunately this crap is too common in my job. i know that case is totally unrelated to the op BUT my point is, people need to be educated about their pets. sadly the knowledge fairy isn't going to teach them in their sleep and so people should take it on themselves to learn as much information as is relevent to their animal (their responsibility) before they take it on.
