Wireless on computer won't work

So set up my D-Links Router with my cable[net 1] broadband the other day. It works grand with the usb wireless adapter, but gives awful range. Once you walk 1 or 2 metres away from it, out of the door of the room its in, the connectivity drops to around 60percent, and doesnt work in rooms right next to sitting room[where router is].
Was thinking- maybe its the adaptor, not the router. But when I search for a wireless network with the computer, it never works. Is there something wrong with my laptop's wireless?

The obvious question here is have you got the laptop wireless switched on? if you have installed a usb wireless adapter on the laptop it may have messed up the settings for the laptop wireless adapter.

It is switched on .Its detecting the router signal now, and connecting to it, but my broswers won't detech it. The settings on the router are right, as the usb works[and I've tried the laptop wireless with the usb software installed and not]. So would it be something wrong with my laptop wireless?

Also, tried to hook up my psp- won't connect, says settings are incorrect, when they are right. Help?
