Brendan Boyer was clearly miming The Hucklebuck tonight in the Showbands tribute!

I thought RTE didn't permit such antics?

I'm afraid Mrs Wishbone Ash insists on having PK on! ;)

(That sounds like a pathetic excuse doesn't it?)

I've seen that on the LL before. They prefer to mime against a recording. Otherwise the accoustics are terrible. Don't know what kind of sound system they have there but if they don't mime, so many of the live performers sound like they can't sing. Some of the Your a Star contestants sound better.

Not that I really watch either of these shows of coiurse. ;)

Late Late sucks. You get what you deserve for watching the tripe.

    Very constructive.

I'd say mike65 was gyrating around the place to that great son of Waterford - miming or not! ;)

I head Joe Dolan was big influence on Blur.

Bowyer was miming in his prerecorded slot, and miming poorly at that.

He was also miming to the 1960s recording. Very poor representation of a guy that is presumably, still in posession of a reasonable singing voice given that he had to rush off to a gig.

Ronan Collins, who I have to say I have a lot of time for, did very well, with informed commentary and a bit of craic, and a tribute to his friend Joe Dolan at the close. Well done to him. (I meander here slightly, when I remember that little upstart Louis Walsh castigating him as a failed showband drummer some years ago. I know who I'd rather have a pint with).

As an aside, and I'd say we could write a thousand posts on it, but the gaffes of Pat Kenny, the semi states answer to Alan Partridge were again evident tonight.

The man is a competent and intelligent current affairs broadcaster, but lost on entertainment TV.

    Some passing observations while watching:

-When greeting Janet Street Porter, stumbled over the welcoming kiss, and again, closing the interview.

-When closing the showband show interlude, made an issue of the lead singers (physical rather than musical) stumble mid song, (he didn't miss a note).

-Introduced one of the panellists by an incorrect surname, and attempted a recovery by saying, "sure you wouldn't get elected by *either surname* anyway"-accompanied by sharp intakes of breath and whoops from the audience.

-Drew unwarranted attention to Bowyer, following his "performance" by going on about his voice, and "did he still have it" etc.

-Insulted Eileen Reid, who has remained active enough in the industry, by saying that she did nothing for years.

I really think we should have a Pat Kenny hall of shame thread here, to be added to week on week, and based solely on his televisual (and to a much lesser degree, radio) exploits.

We'll make a column mention in the Indo yet. I'm already dizzy at the prospect ;)

    The truth hurts. ;)

Thanks for listing those RoundyMooney. Pat is about as useful as a cast iron lifejacket.

Not to go totally off track, but switched over to the Jonathan Ross show mid-way through the LLS and watched him interviewing Tom Hanks - excellent bit of entertainment, really brought home how useless poor auld Pat really is in comparison.

Also, did anyone see that geezer with the mullet and the grey goatee from the Freshmen telling a tale about Jack Lynch and De Gaulle (WTF?), not getting any response from the audience, then having to listen to the guy next to him getting a great laugh for a story about Elvis. He then proceeded to interrupt PK and managed to plug both his book AND a gig he was doing shortly! What a plonker .

No bother rkm. PK is putty in the hands of anyone with a bit of a dominant streak.

I can't express enough how unfit he is for his role as RTE's flagship presenter. Give Tubridy the gig, he's not Jonathan Ross, but he does quite well. Even going back to Ronan Collins again, another broadcaster who could be doing so much more...

This is the nail hit on the head for the plank. He handles current affairs well, dies a death in entertainment slots.

Since I can't and wouldn't watch the LLS, I fully endorse this idea. Some reading for me to be entertained each week.

    Give Tubridy the gig

    Jesus Tubridy is awful too.

We have loads of comedians in Ireland. Why can't they do it? Surely most of them are intelligent enough to have conversations with people, inserting the odd joke here and there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,910 ✭✭✭✭RoundyMooney

The thing about Tubridy, is that you either like him or you don't.

I don't think it's a comedians gig, a presenter should be able to deal with the heavy hitters as well, that's what makes the headlines and keeps the ratings up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,382 ✭✭✭✭AARRRGH

I reckon comedians could though? Surely some of them are smart and have a serious side :)

Tubridy - so many things wrong with his show.

    1. He's too ugly for TV.
    2. He's not charasmatic whatsoever.
    3. He thinks he is Frank Sinatra or something. It's so cringeworthy.
    4. He tries too hard.
    5. His show thinks it's from the US.
    6. and finally... his conversations do not flow properly. Especially with the (mostly) tabloid guests he has.

As much as I dislike anything Tubridy does (full agreement with dublindude on all his points), he'd still be better than Kenny in the LLS chair. Once he was conforming to the genre the LLS represents rather than this pseudo-Jay Leno BS, and had the type of guest that the LLS goes for rather than the bubblegum guests he seems to get on the saturday night, I think he could pad out the role much better.

That said, I'd prefer to see it going to someone else....but that's not RTÉ's style...if they haven't been groomed in a radio studio for 5+ yrs first, they're certainly not going to be handed the reins of the prize stallion.

Comedian? I don't think we need a comedian in the role; we need someone with a bit of wit, certainly, but someone who can be taken seriously as well and has the balls to stand up to guests and make the show the hosts'. Besaids what comedian could you get that wouldn't alienate the target market?

[edit] BTW I like Kenny in his radio guise, he doesn't seem to f*ck up as much and defintiely comes across better. As noted by many on here, he was never really cut out for the LLS role...even if Kenny Live wasn't particularly bad (AFAIR)...

Saw the late late show and marvelled at the difficulty maxi had trying to smile. Some botox job that ! I'd ask for my money back.
Oh yeh! - Eileen Reid's difficulty in keeping her legs closed, not that I was looking or anything.
