You say you are interested in HD Sports. If you watch a lot of the Football, Rugby, Cricket on Sky Sports then i would highly recommend Sky HD. I have 47inch tv and switched from sky+ to hd 12 months ago. The difference between sky pictures on sd and HD are very noticeable on sports coverage. Not all sports are in HD on Sky but 90% of above i reckon is in HD. All live premiership football in HD. Setanta not in HD yet.
BBC HD and Sky one Hd are also worth a look.
I would also recommend subscribing to their movies package for a month or two as well to try out the HD movie package. I never watch Sky Movies sd. But i watch an occasional movies on Sky Movies HD, But the real bonus is the HD movies on Sky Anytime. Here they download movies old and new in HD to your harddisk for you to watch. The movies remains there for up to 7 days for you to watch. They download an average of four movies a week. There is always at least 4 movies a month that i would like to watch here at a time that suits me. (Thats euro 2.50 per movies at most, not bad value)

The Difference is well worth it, if you subscribe to either of the Premium Channel packages. Sky hd highly recommended.(and i havnt even mentioned the Dolby Digital Sound)

yes. I hope your screen is 1920x1080 native and not 1366x768 or similar though.

I wouldn't buy an HD or BD DVD player yet though!

Agree Totally, Better to have 1080p. But not to dis hearten the op who has bought the new 42INCH tv, I would have to question the benifits of 1080p on a 42 inch tv. A 1080i picture on 42 inch is excellent. So if you bought a 720p or 1080i tv I would not be too bothered, you will not notice the difference in picture. The benifits of 1080p come into the equation really from 50inch upwards, unless you sit on top of your tv.

In relation to HD DVD Players, avoid like the plague. There will be great offers on HD DVD PLayers avoid avoid avoid. If you really want a HD player go for Bluray. At the moment this looks like the winning player. This week was a bad week for HD DVD PLAYERS and Toshiba. All film studios are now going to use bluray. Up until this week Paramount and Universal were exclusive to HDDVD. They this week anounced that they will still support HD DVD, But the will now also support Bluray. This means now that from this year all film studios support BluRay and only Paramount and Universal will release on hd dvd too. So if you were a betting person......

The Sony PS3 is a really good Bluray player. Constantly being upgraded online. You can also store your music collection on it to play through your home cinema sound system. You can watch your Digital Photos on your tv with the inbuilt card readers. You can browse satellite/boards.ie on your tv with the inbuilt internet browser, Oh and did i mention you can also play games on it!!

There is no advantage to 1080p except for game consoles and USA 30fps transfers from 24 film.

Almost all screens are p and deinterlace. For Broacast all of which is 576i or 1080i a 1080i native screen is a slight advantage. But decent deinterlacers are mostly as good.

My cheap SD DVD player does progressive on component allowing good playback of NTSC source. For PAL it doesn't really matter.

A PS3 is a good idea if you like games and want to be an early HD disc adopter. It looks very like HD DVD is in it's death throes and the marginally better Bluray (which is not just Sony) has won.

Ive just after buying the HD-DVD player for the 360, a day before the Warner announcement. At least Im getting 5 free HD-DVDs and will buy up a few cheap ones from America, hate the way Blu-Ray has region coding :( My TV is 1080p, but isn't Sky in 1080i or 720p? Will probably wait till Sky do an offer on HD, then Ill get it. Is Channel 4 HD on Sky?

Oh well, Your Dvd Player might make a good door stop in the future... Google Betamax.
Not all Bluray dvds are region coded. But yes many are. I too get cheap bluray from the USA.
Yes Sky is 1080i. But your DVD Player should be 1080p

Channel 4 HD not currently available in ROI.

You might get a good offer in March/April around the same time as launch of Freesat. Or you can now buy on Ebay for E390

Sky now have offer in UK for HD For £149 stg plus install£30 that circa Eur199 plus Eur40 Install. Not sure if this offer is available in ROI. Its not available direct from sky only through ASA
