    Hi folks,

This is probably totally off-topic but I would like to modify my Audi car radio to pick up Long Wave so I can listen to RTE Radio 1 here in London. Any suggestions, or should I go for an aftermarket radio?

Really doubt its modifiably. Go to Halfords and get a JVC headunit, problem sorted...

I've never seen a VAG car with its original radio to have decent LW. Or MW, for that matter.

LW radios are getting like hens teeth.

You'd build a dedicated LW radio easier than modify a car radio.

My Peugot 00 car radio gives R4 LW and the french & German LW good here in Limerick and even occasionally R.Devon on MW during daytime.

The problem with one out a boot sale or scrap yard is the Radio Code. I have it for one but not my 96 Peugot.

I'd never have envisaged watty driving ONE French car, certainly not two.....

I suppose he might see it as a project, something to work on! :D

I miss the giant 7 seater desiel Peugot estate. Even with 7 adult sized seats up the boot was still estate sized. And with 3rd row down a 5 seater van! The modern people carriers have space for about 2 laptops behind the 3rd row.

The 106 is very reliable (the 900cc is wifes, mine is 1200cc) and much pleasanter than similar Fiestas or Fiats.

The newer Peugots have smaller less good aerials.

What I'd like would be 2l to 3l desiel hi top or camper fitted with 19" racks and telescopic clark mast and popup 1.1m dish.
    HD TV
    Satellite, & DTT
2 popup motorised dishes, one 80cm and one 1.1m
    Analogue TV
    137kHz to 10GHz bands transmitters / tranceivers
    Desktop PC
    Auxiliary alternator for 24V
    22OV
    cooking and sink
BB via Satellite, metro, Digiweb Mobile, Fixed Wireless or Edge/HSDPA depending on location.
    Analogue, DAB and DRM radio
    Fridge

Anyone think of anything I left out?

    R,
Did you complain to Audi about the lack of LW on your car radio?

(would be interesting as to what their reply would be?)

What type of aerial is on the car?
If a "demister" type you would really need a 'whip' type installed when replacing your radio with a LW capable one for decent reception.
"Demister" Aerials are poor and very prone to picking up interference from electronics in the car.

yep nothing beats a big whip, other than a bigger whip.

The car is a 2001 model, bought second hand, so it's a case of Caveat Emptor I'm afraid.

I understand VAG are shipping car radios with LW on their newest models though.

probably a change of mind due to complaints from the Irish community in Britain as well as listeners of BBC R4 LW

One would have thought RTE would have been more proactive with manufacturers on this issue of cars not having LW on the radio, most especially with this on the agenda:

Because RTE AM is closing down. LW will soon be DRM only.

Actually I saw a 2.5l 1993 Ford Diesel with 2 x double bed. single bed, cooker, toilet / shower /combo, cooker, fridge & 220V AC. He wants 10k.

I'd only keep the double bed above the cab as such. (the other is the 4 seater table). The small table & 2x seat that converts to single bed would be for the Radio Gear as would part of wardrobe.
