Is 78c per mile a good mileage rate or a slap in the face? No differentiation between car engine sizes, just a single rate.

Very good. Get yer self an old TDi and you'll be laughing.

That's a good rate. It's not quite in line with the extraordinarily profitable civil service rates but it's still good.

You're lucky to be getting that. The last place I worked (private) were giving only 50 odd - and that was after I complained...

I've been meaning to check this actually, particularly with the rise in fuel costs! I drive my own car while I'm waiting for work to buy a small van. I and two others are in a similar boat and we each get 50c per mile. Obviously covers the cost of the fuel itself, but a bit more padding for servicing etc I think is in order.

So in short, what are you all getting?

Civil service is 107 per mile.

It's not a slap in the face at all. A slap in the face is being told to take the bus in future, after handing in the form. And then an email being sent to all staff stating that if the bus is cheaper then bus it. :D

It all depends on how many miles you do and compared to the civil service rates. Less than 2k a year then it's crap.

Civil service rate is 126.01 cent per mile/78.32 cent per km (1501cc and over).

Thanks for all the replies. Buying some old TDi is not an option since I have a car already.

Also, 72c, not 78c, my mistake. The other thing is that my original contract didn't require or specify this but they are trying to change (force) it now. I am an external consultant, not an employee.

Looks good to me. I get 65c/mile doing less than 2000 per year.

On the topic of the civil service rates, it's worth noting that after a certain limit (4000 miles I think) the rate drops to less than half the figure quoted above. If the 78c is a single continuous rate and you're driving enough mileage to spread out the fixed costs then it'll start to look like an extremely good rate.

    i get .8492 cent / mile in a 1ltr car. SWEET!

do a trip from dublin to cork every month too!

It drops to 30 something iirc. If you are doing serious mileage you'd hit the second rate quite early in the year.

I think we receive 43.5c per km, which is roughly 70c a mile if I'm correct.
