    Brogan named as Dublin skipper
    Thursday, 10 January 2008 21:22

Alan Brogan has been selected to succeed Colin Moran as captain of the Dublin senior footballers for 2008.

The 2007 All-Star wing forward captained the Dubs at Under-21 level, most famously leading them to their first ever All-Ireland U-21 title in 2003.

Moran was captain for the two latter years of the Dubs' Leinster SFC three-in-a-row, following in the footsteps of Paddy Christie who lifted the Delaney Cup in 2005.

Brogan is a son of Dublin legend Bernard Brogan snr, and 2008 could be quite a year for the Brogan family as their youngest son Paul is being tipped to join both Alan and Bernard jnr in the Dublin senior team.

All three brothers are in the Dublin panel for Saturday's O'Byrne Cup quarter-final against Westmeath at Parnell Park.

The 26-year-old Alan has four Leinster senior medals to his name, represented Ireland in the International Rules series and collected All-Stars awards in both 2006 and 2007.

The St. Oliver Plunkett's clubman would surpass all that if he can skipper Dublin to their first All-Ireland senior success since 1995.

Have to say I was rather surprised to read this. Being abroad I'm fully up to date with the latest goings on in the Dubs camp but I didn't see Brogan getting the captaincy. He does play by example I guess, although a lot of people believe he didn't deserve his All Star last year. Were there any other candidates? Barry Cahill? Bryan Cullen? Mossy Quinn?

There were other candidates like Whelan,Shane Ryan and Cluxton.I read somewhere that Pillar left the captaincy decision to the team and they chose Brogan or quite possibly he volunteered.

When you think of it,it makes sense. You need an outfield player who can communicate with the team and lead them.Cluxton wouldn't be able to communicate with the forward or midfield line.Mossy Quinn was off form last year and while he's on fire in the club championship,it seems that they chose a man who has led Dublin in the best of times and the worst and that being Alan Brogan. His past success at under 21 level may have been another criteria the team based their decision on.

Quite happy that he got it,one of my favourite players.Against Mayo and Kerry he scored points that could have saved us towards the end.Best man to play at his best when under lots of pressure. So it makes a lot of sense.

I think Brogan is a good choice as captain. His workrate is always high and so he will lead from the front and by example.

I would have giving it to Brian Cullen, class player and drives the team on.

Mossy has done a good job as captain with Vins alright, seems to have matured a lot this season but I suppose big games in Croker will be real test. Presume he was non-runner for captaincy anyway as he's not on the panel for another month or possibly two.....

I don't think there are any real inspirational leaders on the Dublin team. I would have personally gone for Bryan Cullen but have no problems with our best forward in the last couple of years getting it.

On the subject of Mossy Quinn, I'm fairly optimistic he can play an important role for Dublin this year. He is, imho, the most intelligent footballer that Dublin have and I can see him filling the void left by Jayo. He's also an unbelievable finisher and has gotten some vital goals for Dublin in the last few years.

Terrible choice as skip. Not a leader, or a made to stand up in the heat of the battle.

He's more of a leader by example than anything else. I'm also hopeful that this will help him mature and he can make the best decisions for the team rather than trying to beat the opposition himself. Anyway, he has to be better than Colly Moran!:p

Brogan is too self centered, always looking for personal glory, taking pot shot from crazy positions.

We havent a year to waste while Brogan matures into a captain.

I feel we are a team really short of real leaders.

I agree with that. A far better captain than Collie Moran.

Nothing against Brogan, but I like Cullen too.

I think Alan will do fine as captain. Did his father ever captain the Dubs ?

Would have preferred Bryan Cullen, but Brogan's a good second choice. Good workrate, and makes things happen around him. Hopefully the extra responsibility will help him mature into the great player he has the potential to be.

Or it could be a burden that will lessen his influence. I think that Cullen may have been a better choice. IMO one of Brogan's main faults is his decision making at times, I wonder if this will affect his captaincy
