    Hi,

Just wondering if anybody would care to recommend their best film/films of 2007 - and not just the so called "Blockbusters" - I'd be more interested in some hidden gems that may not have attracted the media interest they deserved.

    Thanks.

    Anything but "Once". Stay away.

INLAND EMPIRE: Brilliant and insane epic from David Lynch.
Paprika: One of the most refreshing animé films of recent times. An imagination riot.
The Science of Sleep: The most disgracefully ignored film of last year. Almost as good as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (although that film remains the finest Gondry masterpiece), but it is quite high on the whimsy scale so not for everybody.
The Darjeeling Limited Wes Anderson's latest opus, and my favourite since Rushmore.
Paris, je t'aime: Uneven anthology film, but has some absolutely terrific segments, including excellent shorts by Tom Tyker (Perfume, Run Lola Run), Alexander Payne (Sideways, Election) and many others.
The Fountain: There is a strong possibility you will hate it, but it tries something different, and I for one felt it succeeded.
2 Days in Paris: Basically Annie Hall in Paris, but a very assured debut from Julie Delpy.

I also second Once, truly wonderful film. This is England is also an astonishing piece of work from Shane Meadows, well worth seeking out. Hallem Foe was also a refreshing but pitch dark little British gem.

you know what? im going to say death proof. id say a LOT of people will disagree with me, but i really enjoyed it!!

Brainless, idiotic, stupid, needlessly gore-filled and oh so much fun. I loved it. The bit with Zoe Bell on the bonnet of the car was just class.

The Bourne Ultimatum. Bit of a blockbuster, but I enjoyed it. Not the best of the Bourne films, but well worth a watch, only if you've seen the other two first though.

2007 was a comparatively poor year for cinema, in my opinion.

I'd recommend Zodiac, and Blood Diamond was also worth a look. The Bourne Ultimatum was the best of the big-budget flicks. 30 Days of Night, I Am Legend and We Own The Night are all worth watching, but nothing to write home about.

I'm still waiting for the release of The Assassination of Jesse James and American Gangster over here, so my opinion may change!

I thought 2007 was better than previous years for overall quality of output. Sorry for giving a boring list but some of my recommendations are:

    Into The Wild
    Eastern Promises
    Zodiac
    Inland Empire
    4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days
    No Country For Old Men
The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
Before The Devil Knows You're Dead
    Gone Baby Gone
    Bridge To Terabithia
    Control
    Lars And The Real Girl

Once - good but not great.
    The Namesake - liked that.

I'd recommend Shoot Em Up for those who haven't seen it (and watch it again, for those who have). It's an absolutely genius film. The action is unbelievable, the acting is way over the top and the story is obsurd. Put it all together and you get my film of the year. Sit back, switch off the brain and enjoy every damn second of it.

How can you fault a film where a guy is killed with a carrot?

^ Yes very entertaining, that and Planet Terror were ridiculously good fun! :)

exactly, it was mindless brillaint entertainment!! with action, dialogue and feet fetish that you only come tp expect from a tarantino film!!
2007 was a comparatively poor year for cinema, in my opinion.

ah i dont know about that, i think it was better than previous years and it did have 300, die hard 4 transformers and death proof so i was happy!

twas a bit of a blah year film wise:

really enjoyed perfume [thou not sure if it counts, it came out tail end of '06 but took forever to get here]

Persepolis I thought was fantastic but I'm biased cus I'm an animator :D

The Science of Sleep def one of most overlooked films of the year

Into the wild I thought was very well made all round but I hated the book and the subject matter just annoyed me - glorifying someone for being really stupid.

What would jesus buy was pretty entertaining

La Vie En Rose I enjoyed alot and Zodiac but man its really hard to think of anymore. And the worse part is it wasn't that there was millions of really bad films this year, there were just so many blah films - at least you remember the really bad ones.

What language is The Science of Dreams supposed to be in? I assumed looking at the cast it would be in French but the... VHS tape I rented has a French soundtrack that appears to be (really badly) dubbed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

The Darjeeling Limited is fantastic, definitely worth a look
    also:
    Zodiac
    Planet Terror
    Black sheep :D
    300

Do you mean the Science of Sleep? It is in a mix of French, Spanish and English, mostly French. No poor dubbing as far as I am aware.

Why not be constructive instead of taking the emo approach and suggest alternative years with better quality movies. Im all ears.

    Why not tongue my balls?

I was offering my opinion that a lot of the 2007 movies that have been recommended aren't worthy of recommendation, IMO.

How you manage to invoke 'emo' into the conversation I don't know.

    It's not about previous years.

That kind of comment is not acceptable here, so please don't repeat it.
