As if to use it as an external holder or to try boot up the Macbook from?

When booting the Mac Mini hold the T key (starts the computer in Target Disk mode)until a firewire logo appears on the screen. Use a standard firewire cable to connect the Mini to the laptop. After a second or two the Mini will appear as an external Firewire drive on the desktop. Be aware though, it's possible to delete files from the Mini's drive that will render it un-bootable so be careful what you do.

cheers, it will just be to store large audio files from the macbook on the mac mini, should be safe enough...

There is an easier and imo better way to do this. Use the firewire cable to connect the computers together, go to System Preferences > Network and click the Firewire icon on the side. Give the machines an i.p. address in the same range and voila - a 400Mbps network between the 2 machines plus you retain the full functionality of both machines !!

Here's a link to configure it on Panther - the principle is the same on Tiger or Leopard. This network can be used in parallel with any existing network already configured.
