There's a pretty decent Spar about 5 minutes walk away from the Shanagary apartments. Also Xtravision, cafe, beauty clinic/spa, pharmacy, maybe also dry cleaners, in the same row of shops.

There's no big parks but there are nice walks along the river and a small park down by river.

Walk to triangle in Ranelagh, about 2 km.

There's nothing really in Milltown, everybody gives out about lack of facilities. It's a nice part of town though and most people just go to Ranelagh to get stuff.

I'm living in Milltown and I love it. Around the corner from Ranelagh, walking distance to / from town if you're really stuck. Handy for shop, luas. And a short spin from everything else. Safe and quiet too. No complaints here anyway.

My boyfriend and I lived in Shanagarry for over 3 years, absolutely loved the place, fantastic views of the river and some lovely walks (used to walk over to Bushy Park a good bit, about 40 minutes away, by the river nearly the whole way). Sure there's not much shop/facility wise, but when you're that close to the LUAS stop it's not that much of an issue. Dundrum so close as well. As well as the shops up opposite Mount St. Annes, there are a couple of shops up by Windy Arbour as well - still pining after San Marino's takeaway months after leaving the place. :D

I used to walk to work in the city centre when I lived there, and I'd say it took me about 20 minutes to get to Ranelagh but I am not the fastest walker so that mightn't necessarily be how long you take :D - there are two ways I used to walk, you can either walk up the Milltown Road and down the Sandford Road (nice leafy short cut through the Milltown Institute if it's during daylight hours) or walk up past the tram stop and cross the tram line at Cowper and then down a couple more streets onto the main street in Ranelagh - you come out beside McSorley's pub IIRC.

All in all, I would have happily stayed in Milltown forever, but couldn't justify the renting, and the lack of our own space, lovely and all as are flatmates were.

    Good luck! :)
