After the Warner blu ray announcement I'm warming to the idea of buying a ps3. I was hoping someone might give me a quick run down on its features? I have XBMC at the moment....can the ps3 play xvid's? Can you surf the internet with it? What are its selling points? Thanks

It'll play Xvids, so long as you have the latest firmware update. It has a web browser that is accessible from the XMB menu. Not the fastest browser but getting better with each update. If you feel some strange need to do your net stuff on the PS3 rather than the PC you just used to post, you can install one of several versions of PS3 Linux currently available for free. Selling points are a good Blu-Ray player, a processor/gpu combo that is at least as good as the X360 (only the coming years will show us if it's actually capable of beating on visuals/sound), a cooling system that doesn't sound like your hoover and a good catalogue of games that is thankfully starting to shape up after a really weak launch.

Right now, the X360 is probably a better console for games. If Blu-Ray floats your boat, PS3 wins. Games-wise, it's getting there.

Are there emulators available for the ps3 of the older systems? Can it read files off a usb drive?

Buy the 80gb version and it plays PS2 games( it has a chip for backwards compatibility ...cant be done in software ) and they all play PS1 games as this can be done in software. The 40gb version will not play PS2 games.

Yes it will read any USB storage device , hard drives , flash drives etc.

The PS3 doesn't seem to be as friendly towards Xvid/DivX as the 360 is, the MS console seems to be far more stable, at least when playing files from a DVD-R.
Stick with the 360, its got better games and more of them.
Over here the 40gb machine plays feck all whilst the 60gb has crappy software PS3 emulation, still no Outrun 2006, and that particular console is as rare as hens teeth.
For emus the best console is actually an original Xbox, a PC under the skin, easily modified and there are tons of apps and emus for it, a nice version of MAME for example.

to the mods, I know its against the rules to discuss modded consoles, but its difficult to be asked a question about emus without the topic coming up.

I didn't see the poster ask anything about a 360. Was about emulation of a ps2. 60gb does it very well for your info

It's as rare as hen's teeth, rather than merely being as rare as a discontinued console because the emulation is not at all crappy. It's also not software emulation but a combination of software and a PS2 GPU chip.
