I was thinking earlier how long is it since films used to have intermissions?
i remember them in my childhood, but i havent seen one in what has to be at least 10 years.

    when did cinemas stop them?

The last time I remember an intermission was during Bravehart, what was that, 1996ish. It's a lenghty enough film though if I can remember correctly!

I remember two intermissions at Gandhi.

Yes, I went to see Gandhi!

I'm embarrassed to admit this now but I did go to see Titanic and there was an intermission.

I went to college in Maynooth and they used to (and maybe still do) show films every Sunday night in a building on the old campus. Every film, regardless of length, had an intermission so they could flog us sweets & soft drinks and the smokers could get some nicotine out the back.

I remember a particularly annoying one during the middle of Batman Forever as a nipper :D:D

And there was one for Titanic, that was January 1998.
EDIT: Oops, just read Firetrap's post!

    Why the embarassment?

I've been going to the pictures since 1977 (not that regularly though) and I can't recall any intermissions.

Remember when they used to show other films before the main feature?- usually wildlife type documentaries.

I'm at the cinema a lot but Titanic was the only intermission I've seen organized.

Ah yes - the intermissions. In some instances it was to allow the reel to be changed. Either that or to increase takings at the shop.

Bring back the intermission! Us smokers would appreciate it ;) But I doubt the security staff would see it that way!

I remember those in the early 80's. It came in handy because my mother was totally disorganised and we were always late for everything, but it didn't matter at the cinema because the documentary woulsd "buy" us half an hour!
