    Hi,

I was hoping someone may have connected up their PC via HDMI to a HDMI TV?

Baiscaly I want to store all my media (Movies, Music etc ) on a PC with a Analogue/Digital TV card on it. Basicaly I want to connect the TV signal and broadband into the PC and display it on a TV 50 feet away and use a wireless keyboard to control the lot.

The alternative and simpilar cable solution seems to be to go with DVI from the PC and use a DVI to HMDI convertor into the TV. Any advice would be great.

    Thanks
    G

50 feet of hdmi cable is going to cost, last time i checked it was a stupid price. could have come down though.

On a side, considering the computer only has DVI output you can't get hdmi output. You cant convert dvi to hdmi with an adapter for 10quid??????

There's a couple of things to watch out for here , first , thats a long run for DVI/HDMI , second , DVI carries no sound , so you'll need an extra cable for that.

With a run that long , the cable is going to be expensive , your looking at 15-20 meters , Ive tested cables at that length and the cheaper ones have severe drop outs so your going to have to stump up some extra cash for a good one.

Is it at all possible for you to get the PC closer to the TV? A good option would be to have the PC modded to a HTPC case with some quiet fans and put it closer to the TV , What kind of PC do you have , if you built it yourself then that option could work out cheaper than the cable!

DVI and HDMI are pin for pin compatible by the way , the cables carry exactly the same video signals so there is no conversion done , just a re-route of the signals to the corresponding pins.

Connected the PC via HDMI to HDMI TV.

I have and guess what, it didn't work. There's no sound. I'm trying to 'tell' the tower to re-route the signal away from the VGA and through the HDMI but it's not listenning to me.

Maybe you could get one of those 'media player' ext HDD enclosures with HDMI instead of storing the movies on the PC ?

You need to make sure you have the sound connected to the graphics card to push it down the cable, then its a matter of changing the source.

    Thanks DK, for your input.

A shop selling 2nd-hand computers installed the graphics card into the tower, a DELL Dimension C521, in order to include sound as part of the signal sent to the TV so hopefully, that's OK.

Changing the source on my system is done using the TV remote. There are various options: TV, Ext, PC, AV, Component, HDMI1/DVI, HDMI2, HDMI3 and finally USB. When I select any of the HDMI options a box appears containing the message 'The source is not connected, please check the connection again.'

have you set up your pc to display to another source?
depending on what type of card you have you can select the tv by right clicking on the desktop and their should be an option for your graphics card and you can then extend or clone the signal to the tv

    Thanks Skerries, for your input.

The only moniter connected to my pc is the one I'm using now, the TV.

I'd already tried a right click and one option that looked promising was 'View source'. I'd hoped that would show a short list of various possible moniters or cable options (VGA, HDMI etc) but instead, it displayed a document containing around 2000 words displayed in the old typewriter serif typeface letters. The words are in various different colours: blue, red and black. It was packed with all kinds of information I didn't understand. I didn't try to read it all as I thought it'd probably give me a headache, also, I don't think it contains the information or 'select' options I need.

2 other promising looking options on the right click were 'properties' and 'encoding'. I checked them both and the information I need isn't there either.

Although I'm not sure what type of graphics card's been installed to my pc I could find out if you thought it might help.
