Rather sad story for those of us who have watch the long running cop show
Jeff Stewart, who plays Reg Hollis and is the last member of the original cast (1984), apparently tried to kill himself on the set having learned of his characters exit from the show.

It must be a bit like release from a life sentence getting the chop from a long running soap/series as thats all you might know. I can't think of Stewart from anything else.

Incredible. That is a sad story. I've never heard of that happening before. Haven't watched it for about a year now. I suppose they got rid of Tony Stamp in that time.

He wouldent be the first casualty of that police soap .I think the guy who use to play 'Tosh' (cant remember his name ) also topped himself after years of alcoholisim

homah_7ft, I had'nt watched since about May myself and went to google assuming Tony Stamp was still in the cast. I suspect once his regular partner was gone, he would get axed soon after.

Very sad. The Reg Hollis character is actually one of my favourites, and is very very much under-used at the moment. It's a character which was quite deep several years ago, but seemed to be totally abandoned when his girlfriend was killed. It's just used for comedy relief at the moment. Such a waste of what could be a complex and interesting character. Looks like the producers are now concentrating on the younger "sexier" models.

Will be very sorry to see Reg go, and wish Jeff all the best for the future.

Haven't watched the show in years, but whenever I've thought of it he and Tosh are the people that spring to mind. Sad to see his career's end bring him this much public pain.

Pretty shocking. The Bill has been spiralling downhill from what it used to be "back in the day"...since they did the sexing-up thing and turned it into a cop soap, it's lost my viewership....I think where they are with it now on RTÉ1 is about where I lost interest.
Always liked Reg as a character....the guy has been typecast by the role and would probably have it hard to find paying work in the type of drama we see nowadays...although Eastenders seems to be the destination of choice for any other Bill Has-beens in the past...

..and the Bill is destination of choice for several ex-Enders. Always freaks me out that does.

The last time i watched it was when it was compulsive viewing when Burnside was on it, classic stuff

Which will sadly ruin the show imo. The good old days of Burnside, Roach etc... that was when The Bill was quality imo

The Bill in the early to mid-nineties, ****ing quality. It's a bit of a waste of time now, everything has to be a c.u.n.t.i.n.g soap.

Miss the old theme tune and the ending with the two police walking

Burnside was cracking as was Don Beech, as said now its soap and coppers who really do look to young/pretty for the job!

Pity the Burnside spin-off series did'nt fly.

Forgot about Don Beech :) he was brilliant imo, for me in the last three years or so it has gone downhill, as you said it is now a soap. A real pity.
