I'm looking to get my first proper (i.e. not childs) bike. I need it for very light use on the road and a bit of offroad at the weekends, again very light.

I was looking at teh Focus Fat Boy on Wiggle

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360032163&N=Focus%20Fat%20Boy%202008

A friend of mine who is more into bikes than me recommended it highly for the money but unfortunately they won't deliver to here

So now i'm looking at this BeOne instead

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=24063

Is it any good? The only brands i'd heard of before i started looking was raleigh and GT so it really all over my head.

Any other suggestions? Budget is about £400-£450. I would like hydraulic brakes for reason other than vanity and i need to be able to order online

    Any help appreciated!

Won't they? Your link to the fat boy info clearly states wiggle will deliver to Ireland. You do have to spend over £50 on an order if you live outside the UK to get them to deliver so presumeably no issue there.

I tried to order but get this message
Items not available for your delivery address
Sorry - the items listed below are too heavy, bulky or are not allowed to be shipped via air mail for delivery outside the UK mainland. Either remove them from your order or amend your delivery address to one in the UK mainland.

I bought the missus a bike on Wiggle last spring and there was no problem. It was 20 sterling delivery (although at the time I also got conflicting impressions from their website about whether they delivered here or not).

Also in Autumn I bought the BeOne bike you have there when my road club hit the dirt for a couple of months. Its fantastic, relativley light and a decent spec too. For the money you can't go wrong and it arrived 2 days later. A mate of mine in my club was a junior MTB champ and he thought it was a great deal. He took a loan of it for a few weekends and was uncatchable on it when put up against others on bikes that cost 6 times as much. He did however get cocky and half kill himself on a big jump, bust himself up badly, but the bike was not even scratched... I don't regret buying it anyway, great value considering that it doesn't cost as much as the front wheel on my road bike !

I've emailed them to clear it up and i'll post what they say

I sat here all day debating with myself on whether to order it or not and when i finally went for it this happens!

I'm fairly confident that because i've nothing to compare it with i won't be disappointed with whatever i by but i may as well get something that is not blantantly rubbish to anyone that knows anything about them

Well with the credit card jumping around in front of me and your mini review my arm was twisted into the BeOne. 100 euro cheaper too so that can go towards accessories

    Wiggle will deliver here

My Scr 3 sitting beside me as proof. i cant remember what i had to do to I think it was a paypal payment rather than a credit card one but they will deliver

Yep, definitely deliver here. I got a Focus Variado Expert last july. The box was feckin huge, so I don't think there were any issues regarding it being too bulky. £20 is all it cost.

You won't be disappointed with the BeOne. Its not as fashionable as Kona, GT, etc... but it rides as well as them in my opinion, I rode a GT Avalanche 1.0 and a Kona for about the same cash as well as a specialised, Lapierre and Giant around the time I was ordering. The Specialised and Lapierres were very pretty but their spec was lower than the BeOne, none of the bikes felt too different although I did like the GT, there was something about the way it rode. In the end though the BeOne was such good value, I couldn't say no. For the money its as good as it gets. They also have a pro team (sponsored by chain reaction). I think they are dutch. Forget about what the fashionista's tell you and have fun, these are entry level bikes anyway so if you really do love the sport and want to be upgrading it in a year or two it won't make a difference.

    Excellent, all good to hear!

I'm looking forward to seeing just how unfit i really am.

    Thanks for the input

My brother's BeOne just arrived this morning-Hope you've a few tools around because ya have to put a few bits of it together. Stem, Handlebars, Front Brakes, Pedals (obviously), Saddle and the brakes are reversed so you've to swap them over to Left=Back etc... Fun fun fun!

CRC were very helpful to him though and very quick to deliver. They were out of stock in the overshoes he ordered so they gave him a more expensive pair for the same price.

Is there anything bike specific i'd need? I've got any amount of car tools here

Wiggle are probably not allowed ship Focus products to Ireland due to supplier agreements. There's quite a few brands they can't ship to Ireland, Dahon is another one.

Allen keys and a pedal wrench i think. If you have spanners i *think* one of the standard sizes fits, although i'm not sure. A BBB pedal wrench is only a tenner anyways and good to have. They're a bit longer and quite narrow to fit in the gap easily. Make sure you grease the threads on the pedals a little and the LEFT PEDAL IS REVERSE THREAD! So it's anti-clockwise to tighten! Put a bit of grease on the seat tube too. Just be patient putting the bits on and you'll be fine. Give everything a good tighten and you're off!

If you've any queries just ask on here or go to www.parktool.com for details on anything.

    Enjoy!

Nice one. I'm going to halfords to get the wife a bike this evening so i'll pick up a pedal wrench from there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,320 ✭✭✭Chet T16

Bit arrived today and it was together in no time. Managed to pull the threads on the front brake pushrod adjuster thing but its got a temp fix in place.

Very happy with the bike, the finish is great and the quality seems top notch (i haven't ruled out user error on the lever lol)

BTW wiggle emailed me saying that there shouldn't be a problem ordering and to try again and it appears to work now
