..and you know what, I kind of enjoyed it.

Admittedly Mr.Miike does throw in one or two more
    lactating nipple close-ups
than would be considered strictly necessary, but overall it was a far more intelligent and assured film than the moral outrage had suggested. In some sort of bizarre manner, I was actually somewhat moved by the family story amid all
    the necrophilia, incest and rape.

Now Im not going to be going recommending it to elderly relatives or anything, but it is somewhat refreshing to see taboos broken in aid of the storyline, not simply to gain some free publicity (Lust, Caution Im looking at you!). True, it is probably the most depraved film I have ever sat through, but at least I was repulsed with good cause.

    Anybody else survived intact?

And does anybody know the reason for the blurring of certain organs? Was that censorship / artistic decision / a wish to not get banned outright?

Pretty much the same reaction I had. Surpisingly heartwarming and funny.
I'm also intrigued about the blurring.

I saw it, have it on DVD, and I absolutely loved it. I found it one of the most original films I've seen, probably a masterpiece, and I'd never recommend it to anyone, ever. :)

As for the blurring of organs, that's censorship in Japan. ;)

Yarr I had imagined it was that.
Crazy country they are: necrophilia scenes are grand, as long as we don't see the penis or vagina at any point ;)

I was well impressed when I watched this (didn't actually know much about it beforehand apart from it having some rather odd scenes of
    lactation
. I do think it's the type of film that could go horribly, horribly wrong without strong enough direction. A definite thumbs up for this film.

For me it was a film I'll probably only ever watch once. Didn't like it, films are there for entertainment for the most part and this wasn't entertaining.

It's not a bad film, it's just a bit too weird. Although how funny was it
when riggamortis set in and he got stuck inside the reporter (she was a reporter wasn't she, been a long time since I've seen it)?

Sometimes I think Miike just makes films like this for the sake of shock value. It's not as if he can't make more normal films. The two Young Thugs films for example are great.

Fantastic film, a testament to Miike's directorial vision and proof that it's possible to deal with taboos in a way that is both thought-provoking and non-exploitative.

I can see how it wouldn't appeal to some people, but I disagree about its entertainment value. There's a lot of humour in the film, as well as an unexpected honesty at the core of the characters; I've generally found that people who didn't like it have disliked it for its approach to taboo subjects (ie actually bringing them up) rather than because it wasn't entertaining enough.

This, along with Happiness Of The Katakuris, confirms Miike's place in the pantheon of Quite Possibly Insane (But Brilliant) Directors, imo.

I thought it was quality and I found it to quite funny(possibly unintentional) in parts.
    Nothing shocking about it though.
Has been a while since Ive seen it.
    Thanks for the reminder!

I saw that years ago without knowing much about it and didnt think much tbh. It kind of felt like several different movies edited together. Some parts were sane and sensible and some parts were just silly and not very pleasant. Without the shockingness of it theres not much noteworthy about it imo.

I absolutely love this film and am constantly praising and recommending it here.

I watched this film expecting nothing from it, when it ended I was left stunned for a couple of minutes sitting there just thinking "what the f*ck was that ?". After a bit of thought and getting over the shock of some parts its a great film with a very touching story just approached in a very non-conventional manner. Theres also some fantasticly funny bits in there -
I practically fell around the place laughing at the umbarella lactation scene
    .

And as Karl Hungus correctly points out the bluring or the genetalia is a very common censorship in Japan.

Thats a lie, you recommended it to me :p

Rather enjoyable film, very strange most of the way through, but very very entertaining and the black comedy through it was down right hillarious at times.
