    Hi everybody,

I've been thinking of buying a handheld console for a while, wondering what your opinions were. I'm trying to decide between the Nintendo DS and the PSP

I prefer the type of games that are available for the DS, brian training and interactive one
but I love the fact that you can watch video on on the PSP. ( i am aware of a video add on in development for the DS)
Is it easy to enough to do video conversions/watch xvid content on the PSP?
Also I believe the PSP now has a video out feature?

    hmmmm.....I just dont know :)

    Any/All opinions appreciated :)
    Thanks

i had a psp loved in when i first got it but after a couple of months i got sick of it.the games that were out for it when i had it weren't games suited to a handheld console like you couldn't pick it up and have a quick game like the games the ds has.. My friend has a DS and i play that all the time personally i prefer the DS i think its way more fun... but at the same time that maybe because i don't own a DS and don't get to play it the whole time..saying that a friend has a psp and DS and he refers the DS... im sure there's a few people on here with both who'll prob have a better knowledge of both of them for you..

A- You will not watch videos on psp, no one does, everything has to be mp4, takes a while to convert !

B- psp is a great paper weight, we all have one !

i have both, ds for the win, games are better, its smaller , lighter, battery is great. cheaper,

Agree with the above, my psp is little more than a dusty paperweight. I miss my ds since it broke and plan on getting another one sometime soon.

PSP is great if you have a PS3. For games then get a DS.

have to agree with the above. have both and almost exclusively use the DS at the moment.
I love it too, so handy for bus rides, trains, planes etc. The PSP suffered because it was being fed a constant stream of shovel-ware from the PS2 which just didnt quite work on a mobile system. I love its sleekness and the menu design etc but its just not quite a portable games system nor a playback platform...

Owned both, gave away my DS to the little brother this Christmas after finishing the Phoenix Wright games because I never really liked anything else on it. I'll prob pick up another one in the event anything good comes out (can't think of anything though)

The PSP has better games if you ask me (and metacritic largely agrees), but it's all down to taste. Don't buy one for movies because it's far, far more hassle than you'd think.

Haha, good stuff! You got it all fixed up I hope :D

Oh, I can also organise a PSP for you if you want, it's much better condition than that DS ;)

Geese Any other stuff you wanna sell me!!! No i've orgainised to buy one with a faulty analog stick (i just love repairing stuff!!!).

The Ds is currently super glued back together, and its holding up way better than expected. New case arrived today, to be honest i'm reluctant to change it!!

I like them both, but prefer the psp. The psp is a more complete media solution (if thats what you are looking for, of course)
Its also difficult to fault games like GTA vice city and liberty city stories on the psp. Huge games. Tekken is also a fantastic game. So much to do, and has full online ranking features. Dont forget the tennis games also!

The DS is brilliantly designed. Has very good games like mario bros, and that freakishly long battery life!!!!
I think you should look up the game titles available for both and see which you would prefer playing, then decide which console you want to buy :)
You shoud also think how often you would actually watch video on the psp aswell, I dont do it nearly as much as I thought I would, but I like having the option to buy UMD movies if i am going to be going on a flight or something

Aww, I feel really cheated now that you told me that, a bit of glue!

Here's where I greatly disagree... I regularly convert my half hour cartoons and watch them on my PSP...

In terms of games... it's a toss up... The DS suits me more because I like quick tacky games.. The PSP's games are more powerful and tend to have a longer life.

Nobody watches videos on the DS because they are terrible, you can't fast forward or save where you are in any way. PSP is pretty good at that... Sure it takes a little while to convert the vids, but I had a program to do it for me and it was very little hassle. PSP Movie Creator or something.

I would recommend finding someone with a DS or PSP and playing them to see which one suits you. Most DS games are aimed at 8 year olds. A lot of them are really great fun, but they just don't have lastability. For PSP, it's harder to find good games, but when you do, it'll last longer than the DS ones in my opinion. Of course there are exceptions to both of these and I'm sure I'll get flamed by everyone, but I don't care.

My biggest tip is to youtube a clip of any game you're interested in and you should be able to make up your mind that way.

Well if it makes you feel any better I didn't think it would work either! I cant remember now why but it couldn't be glued decently without being opened, There was something that needed to sit into something else.

Back to the topic though. as has been said already theres some cool quirky games on the Ds , but i really liked GTA: liberty city stories on my cousins PSP.

OP where would you be using it?

10 min bus ride here and there - Prob DS
1hr commute to work - Maybe PSP
over that - DS , psp battery is ment to be awful!

I think this is a little unfair to the DS.. there are plenty of great games out for the DS with alot of depth.. I'v spent endless hours on each and every one of the following:

    Super Mario 64DS
    Fifa 08
    Zelda: P.H.
    Dementium: The Ward
    Diddy Kong Racing
42 All-Time Classics (sums up the DS's brilliance, for me)
    Need For Speed Underground 2
    Tony Hawks American Skateland

Let it never be said that the DS is a kiddies console.. there's great playability to be had!

    Hey,
thanks for all the feedback! It's a lot more than I expected, and it's all been very helpful, thanks

witnessmenow, I spend between 4 to 5 hours each day commuting to work, and you can only read so much during that time!!
My *intention* would be to watch and catchup on tv shows that i miss because I spend so much time commuting, but also to play a game here and there :)

For most video solution, it appears you will have to transcode video to some degree

    Thanks again everyone

    Ian

It is easy to Transcode video and there are a number of free programs that do it for you pspvideo9 is one that springs to mind, i am now using xvid4psp and i convert a lot of stuff, no hassle at all, I watch all kinds of things shows to instructional movies, films, coverted youtube clips, for short trips I play a few quick puzzle games on the PSP like Lumines etc, you can often pick up UMD movies cheaply in sales etc, at the moment i mainly use it for watching and listening to media over game playing, also sonys psp media software is now free to download as well. Basically in my opinion its no hassle to use the PSP for various media.

Get a DS and an R4 card and your DS will be able to do almost everything the PSP can and it will have the better selection of games.

Whats so difficult about movies on PSP??
I bought one a few weeks ago, currently i have about 3 episodes of father ted, 2 eps of peep show, all of the maxx, some south park, beavis and butthead, and about 10 albums on it...and all of it was as simple as downloading psp video express, installing it and letting it do all the video converting..hardly brain surgery

This is my second psp, i sold my first a year and a half ago as i refused to pay the 50 - 60 euro price tag for games. But buying one now is genius as i just bought locoroco, MGS portable ops and GTA:LCS all off play.com for the princely sum of about 60 notes for all 3 games.

Having to convert formats and having to constantly shuffle things around due to memory card space is a hassle to me.

Not that I'm complaining about the PSP in general. You've got games like Loco Roco, Patapon, Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, Syphon Filter, Valkyrie Profile, Crush, Metal Gear Solid Portable, GTA Liberty City & Vice City, Powerstone, Sonic Rivals, a whole host of very good PS2 ports from FIFA to Tomb Raider to Outrun to the Simpsons Game to Formula 1 - much stronger than what the DS has to be honest.

There's more good games on PSP than I have time to play.

Most of those games are ports of 10 year old PS1 games or DC and PS2 games. The DS offers games that actually suit the handheld format and can offer traditional games as well as games that just wouldn't work on any other system. I'm not saying the PSP is rubbish, it's still a good buy and there are some fantastic games on it but the fact remains that my PSP has been idle and uncharged for 3 months now while my DS is constantly in my coat pocket.

I'm the exact opposite - I had a DS first and loved it, and recently purchased a PSP. Since then my DS has been gathering a lot of dust until the girlfriend got Pokemon Battle Revolution. I just have many more reasons to use my PSP a lot more.

One thing that sits badly with me is the price of DS games - they're often a lot shorter than PSP games or feel a bit simpler, and yet they're often more expensive. A trip to GameSpot to purchase a new release will usually set you back €45 for a DS game and between €30 and €40 for a PSP game.

Another advantage for me with the PSP is the PS Store. I recently bought Beats and it's one of the best games for my morning commute, it's strangely addictive and only cost me €8. I'd say the PS Store is still a work in progress, once they start releasing some more classic PS1 games that I missed it'll see me parting with more money. There are also more original IPs like Beats planned for release too.

You can get demo's for the PSP quite easily, which you can't for the DS.

I have lot's of TV shows, blooper reels, anime, movie trailers, cartoons and music videos on my PSP, and it took me all of an hour to convert and transfer over 2 hours of video, so I don't think anyone can really have much of a problem there. The more recent firmwares have made it a lot easier format wise, and I'm sure there might be more fun down the line with a new firmware release, like DivX support.

That arguement doesn't ring true, and I don't think it ever has. The PSP has no more ports than the DS (I am of course only counting 'real games' as the DS is suffering from too many lame ports (like Catz) or half assed cash ins (like 'Pippa's Pony Princess Parlour whathaveyou') which inflate the DS library. What's wrong with ports anyway? I love SimCity and FFIII for my DS as much as Pokemon and Phoenix Wright.

The PSP also has plenty of 'handheld' games - Lumines, LocoRoco, PQ - Practical Intelligence Quotient, Mercury Meltdown, Exit, Crush, Puzzle Quest and Go! Sudoku are all great as 'handheld' titles. Games like Tekken: Dark Resurrection, WipeOut Pure/Pulse, Worms Open Warfare 2, Daxter and Monster Hunter all have quick loading short levels or mission based gameplay that is ideal to pick up and play.

That's something that I love about my PSP, it has games that feel like console games and games that suit the handheld format. Crisis Core is a perfect example of a meeting of both - an epic storyline with cinematics (which themselves are fun to watch on the bus), character development and some longer boss battles *and* a mission system which allows for bitesize play.

I totally agree that the DS has games that wouldn't work on any other system, which is a big reason why I love my DS. I also feel like the DS and the PSP are only beginning to reach their full potential. That's why I have both and enjoy them both, although I do prefer my PSP. It's a complete multimedia device that keeps getting better with each firmware upgrade. For my commute, I can watch an episode of Heroes or Death Note and then play something like Lumines or Crush.

My advice is to try both out, they are similar or different depending on the user and what games you like. If watching videos is more important to you, I much prefer watching stuff on the larger PSP screen than on a DS or even an iPod Touch.

Yep-and all the Brain training and puzzle-based games. There's also My Spanish Coach, which I got recently, it's excellent for learning Spanish on. I don't know many 8 yr olds that are taking on a second language yet.

There is a DS, a DS Lite and a PSP in my house, and they DS get way more play time.

Any time i pick up a DS, i get bored. My PSP on the other hand i keep in the car. Every time im waiting for something/someone, early somewhere, or on lunch etc i whip it out and play.

My wife just fecked off back to the US for the week so i converted two movies and put them on her pink PSP. She then sent me an email when she got to her stopover hotel using the PSP because her phone is not roaming over there. Its an excellent device.

well, thanks for all the advice everyone!!

I went with the PSP in the end, the bigger screen for the video was the clincher :)
It's only takes about 15mins to transcode a 42-min tv show, so that's not much hassle.
The battery life has been excellent so far

Also, I'm enjoying the games more than I though I would :)
