just thinkin about this the other day but how is it that some bands can get away with singing in their own accent eg, arctic monkeys with a heavy sheffield :o accent but if i heard a dublin band singing in the dublin accent id probably hang myself pronto, whats up with that?

    Ha! What edit?

I see your point though. Suppose it depends on genre though.

For example, Manchester is a true breeding ground for indie bands so it sounds normal. If they tried proper rap/R'n'B stuff, doesn't that sound wrong?

Or could you imagine any Irish trad or folk songs sang in a non-Irish accent? It just doesn't work...

good point, i never really thought about the actual origins of the type of music! Theba i think you may have cracked the code!:D

hmm, well I think that some bands intentionally put on heavy accents to disguise the fact that they are technically not great singers.
Arctic Monkeys is the prime example of this, he has no range whatsoever in his voice and imo they are overrated. Singing normally your accent does not come out nearly as much as bands like this, more examples are The Wombats from Liverpool. Although it is their accent (well probably) they put effort into making it come through in singing....

yeah but the point is if a dublin band tried to disguise their singin abilities with a more pronounced accent it just wouldnt happen, unless it was irish music as theBa said

IMO arctic monkeys are a great band, great musicians and started when they were only like 19, fair play to them, his ability to sing, or not to sing doesnt really matter as the lyrics are great etc etc....

King-Stew: Fair enough, everybody looks for something different in music, If you're into your lyrics then perfect (I am into lyrics too but haven't really looked twice at Arctic Monkeys as I just don't like them enough to concentrate when one of their songs is on)...

    Another point....

I'm a big fan of Arctic Monkeys' lyrics but they do appeal to the 18-25 age-group. The fact that the subject of their songs is so down-to-earth, a modest singing ability and use of accent almost seems appropriate for their music.

Much like the instruments, they give a cool sound but, to be honest, it's hardly ground-breaking musical ability. I guess the whole package works together, eh?

yes! and i happen to be right smack bang in the middle of that age group!;)

they definitly are well suited to the music they play, maybe not ground-breaking but the guitars are quite original as they seem to be using normal scales and moving them up or down a note to get their darker sound, actually quite clever, im no drummer but hes supposed to be excellent also!

so basically yeah they are a band of good musicians that work great together as a unit!
