Not sure if this is the correct place to ask but I will anyway. How can I find out how much power my Dell Power Edge Server uses and is there any way to reduce electricity used?

Any ideas or links would be appreciated

There are devices you can get that plug into the mains between the socket and whatever electrical equipment you have that will tell you how much power it is drawing. Can't remember what they're called though :o

You will use less power if the server isn't actually doing anything (obviously), or if you power down disks, turn off monitors etc. after a specified time period. Remove any CPU or memory hogging applications or services and you'll save money too.

Dell wouldn't have any average usage figures. They supply maximums, realistically your usage could be 10-75% of that figure depending on your cpu load and disk usage.

A way of reducing the bill would be to buy a mroe efficient power supply. For typical 500w psu's for them to give the system 500w they will need to draw 600-850w depending on how effecient they are. Psu's from pc power and cooling are know to be the best and most efficient out there. Finding a 100% effecient psu will be almost impossible, but 85-95% should be east to get hold of. Although they will be expnsive.

You can also have the had drives spin down after a certain length of inactivity ( in the power options menu )
