A sunken iPod

    Hi all,

I know this is a very long shot but here goes:

Yesterday evening, the unthinkable happened. As I was getting out of my car, my iPod slipped out of my hand and into a deep puddle. It was fully submerged before I fished it out. It was like a slow motion moment, a sort of  "Noooooooooooooooooo".
Anywho, it won't switch on. I've left it on a heater overnight. I connected it to the PC last night but the PC won't recognise it. I have pretty much accepted (chokingly) that it's a goner long term. I know from working in mobile phones that once water gets in, it's gone.
However, I'm wondering that is there any possibility of retrieving the 3000+ songs that are stored on it? I know I'm clutching at straws but I've had this iPod for nearly 3 years and the thoughts of having to re-install everything on a new one

    R.I.P. iPod 2005 - 2008

Also, my Mam is going to New York at the end of February. Could she buy me an iPod over there and I'd have it working here? Also, how would that work with the voltage difference for charging? A new 80GB is $249 which is about €170.

unfortualately as you said you can get it to turn on with the usb cable or by any means so getting the songs off it yourself will be next to impossible unless it decides to start working again.

the other option but very expensive option is to get the drive contents recovered by specialists, i've used www.cdr.ie before and they were nice to deal with but the thing with data recovery is it's expensive and you probably don't want to shell out close to 800 euros for your music.

re-rip your cd's again is the best best if you haven't kept a backup.

    Wow! e800???
Yeah, I think I'll be re-ripping cds. I don't have a back up as at the moment, my PC is a heap of sh*t.

will all your music not be stored on itunes?

and then its just a matter of syncing your new ipod?

    I wish.
However, I've had the iPod since 2005. Originally, I uploaded everything using my Dads PC. Performance was pretty poor on that PC so I couldn't really take up memory so as I put an album on my iPod, I deleted it from the PC hard drive.
I've since gotten the PC and it's only now fit for the bin. It does have some stuff backed up but not the whole lot. I think I've about 3GB out of 14GB saved.

as a last resort you could open the casing and give the insides a good clean and dry and see if it works. It's a long shot but it got one of my old iPods working, granted i hadn't dropped it in a puddle!

amull87, what sort of HDD is in the iPod? I ask, as you can get USB connectors, that allows you to hook up 2.5" drives, etc, to your PC, using a USB connection.

Also, I know nothing about iPods, but if you bought a 2nd hand iPod of ebay, would you be able to put the old drive into the "new" iPod, so that you could get the songs off it?

if its 3 years old and you have 3000 songs then that suggests it is a 1.8" hard drive presuming it is not a nano

What you should have done at the time is turn it off straight away and then opened it remove any water dry it out leave it to dry for a couple of days before trying to boot it

But its a bit late for that the hard drive should be fine though you need a 1.8" adaptor so you can connect the hard drive to your PC then make an image of the drive or try and see what you can retrieve

Or get another Ipod of similar vintage and swap the hard drive out

he wouldn't have been able to as ipods don't have a full power off switch, they just go into a sleep mode so the OS is rarely rebooted.

    Great advice from everyone! Thanks.
I'm going to leave it drying out and maybe put a charge in it and then see what happens.

Anyone have any clues on my American question?
(Bringing an iPod in from the US. Any issues? What about charging the battery with the voltage difference?)

i'm not really great with HDD measurements but i think it's 1.8"

Ok, I have a mains plug from when I first bought my iPod (this was back when they gave you a mains adaptor with them!). If I plugged this into a US iPod direct, would I fry it? Also what would be the deal with a car charger?
