Griffin Firewave Sound Card

Does anybody know what happened to the Griffin Firewave soundcard, and if anywhere in Ireland/UK still sells them? I've had a good look round the internet, and while they still seem to be going strong in the States, everywhere this side of the pond seems to be out of stock and not getting them back in anytime soon. Have they been discontinued on the European market?

Alternatively, can anyone recommend an external USB or Firewire surround sound card built for the Mac that can plug into speakers with the orange/black/green connections?

How much had you planned on spending ? For a few hundred you can buy a top end Firewire device from M-Audio or several other makers. At the lower end there's the Griffin iMic USB sound device or for slightly more the Creative USB Soundblaster Live is reported to work out of the box on 2 channels on OS X Tiger and above.

    Firewire device.

I picked up a Harmony Audio from Miglia recently as i have just gotten a new imac, previouslt i had 7.1 card and speakers on my old pc and wanted to keep the speakers as they were decent enough.

The box has four minijack outputs and from the midi utility software on the mac can be used to set up a variety of different setting. The box also has some inputs.

I was also looking at the firewave, but like yourself was finding it difficult to find anyone in europe selling it. I think amazon sell it tho.

Thanks for the replies guys :) The Harmony Audio looks the most interesting out of them I think. Decob, I assume you just plug the orange/green/black leads into three of those output jacks, set it up to use 5.1 and you have your surround sound working? And does it work with Front Row and Quicktime, rather than just DVD Player?

Last question, do you know if there's somewhere in ireland that does them or did you just buy direct from Miglia?

    Thanks! :D

You have to go into the Audio Midi Utility to set it up, it then assigns the different speakers to one of the outputs. Like front L&R - output 1/2 (on mine green cable i think) rear L&R - 3/4 (orange), sub and front centre - 6/7 (black).
It works with anything that has real 5.1 audio output (multichannel audio files) - like vlc and the other apps that they mention on the site. They actually recommend VLC for dvd rather than dvd player.

Thanks a mill! Quicktime 7 supports up to 24 channels apparently. I have all my DVDs ripped to the hard drive and playing through Front Row, so Quicktime would be the one I need to work. Not really a VLC fan although it certainly has its uses. Thanks for all the help, much appreciated :)
