I've just started a new job as a pharmacist and have been asked to sign a contract with a three month notice period. I think that that this is a bit excessive and have never have heard of it before. Just wondering what people think or if they have come across it before?

That is stupidly excessive. Although i don't think there is a law against it. Having said that, it is a contract, and you don't have to sign it.

Why not tell them that, while you have no intention of leaving any time soon, you are not going to sign a contract with this notice period. Ask them to reduce it to something normal. If you are already working there, they are not going to want to go to the trouble of hiring someone new to replace you.

I wouldn't be surprised if the three month notice period was relatively common for Pharmacists now, especially given the number of them that are now owned by a small number of large operators.

I have come across it previously for people in more senior management positions. I have also noticed that it has become increasingly common to use it for people who may not be in senior positions but do have jobs that are awkward to fill.

I've come across that kind of notice period for higher-level jobs. As a previous poster said, given the current demand for pharmacists, this may be how your potential employer tries to keep employees.

Why not ask HR if they are willing to negotiate this notice period?
