i sold some guy in the UK a laptop on ebay in October
i checked my mail today and found out he has done a chargeback as he claims it was an unauthorised purchase even though

I have signed for delivery from him In October for the laptop ??
He wont answer any of my emails and his phone number is disconnected
    Paypal are disputing the chargeback

how do these cases usually go ?
    any advice would be welcome

If it was a stolen card that was used then you'll be out of luck. The chargeback will be successful and you'll be out of pocket. Not a lot you can do other than report it to the British police, though if it was a fraudulent card transaction then the card company have probably already done this. A debt collector will be of no use in this case too, as you don't know who actually got the laptop.

If it's some guy taking the piss and trying to steal the laptop using his own card, then he'll likely be caught out and in a lot of trouble himself. Unless he's very clever and didn't use his home address to post the laptop too, and also didn't use his real name.

Whatever the outcome, you'll be able to do pretty much nothing about it I think.

If you haven't already, get a copy of the delivery receipt from the deliver agent (courier or post office). They may only keep records for a short time and if you don't have his actual signature and address, then delivery confirmation alone will be worth little.

Yes he personally Signed for it in October
i think its ann obvious Fraud case as who would sign for a laptop and then 3 months later do a chargeback
note his phone has been disconnected and he wont answer any of my emails

Did you have seller protection with paypal? Did the guy have a confirmed address? I thought the whole idea of paypal confirming the address was to confirm that the registered credit card was at the account holders address

Yep the guy had a confirmed address

Just been informed by payPal You cant get Seller Protection if you live in Ireland.

PayPal: using an electronic payment provider, such as PayPal, offers you extra security. PayPal is free for buyers and your financial details are never shared with anyone else, payment is instant and on qualifying items where PayPal is offered, you are covered up to € 500.00 should you be defrauded. PayPal's Seller Protection programme also protects sellers from fraudulent chargebacks (Seller Protection is not currently available to sellers in Ireland).

I would say you are on dodgy ground then. If paypal refund the credit card company, then they will come after you for their loss (even though it is their responsibility). I hope you do not have any money in your paypal account.

Paypal seem to have Irish residents over a barrel where they do not offer seller protection and they cannot confirm addresses!!

f00kin hell, just as well I registered myself in NI.
I hate paypal.. they protection is useless..
    customer service is worse..
I bought an LCD TV recently on ebay.
Never got delivered, seller ignoring emails..etc
I disputed with paypal and I was told I wasn't covered.
Wasnt told why.. I've no idea why..
I chargedback and retrieved my funds that way eventually.
Ebay un-registered the seller in the end..
Other similar cases haven't been as sucessful for me..

But if the buyer lives in the UK and their address is confirmed and you shipped to that address and the signature is his....I know Paypal are $hits about most things but with chargebacks I've always found them to be ok. If the buyer is saying they never made the transaction then they still have a laptop to show for it which Paypal should acknowledge, if they're saying they made the transaction but never got the laptop then you can take it up with the delivery company.

Did he leave you feedback or anything?
