    Hi everyone,

Your thoughts on our budget projections would be great. Myself and hubby are off for 6 months rtw and this is our rough itinerary and respective budget per person per day.

    Japan 2 weeks €80
SE Asia various 12 weeks €25
    New Zealand 3 weeks €50
    Cook Islands 2 weeks €50
    US 4 weeks €40

These figures don't include major travel expenses like these which are priced per couple:

    Angkor Wat Pass €60.00
    Jungle Trek €260.00
    Japan Rail €570.00
    NZ Activities €?
    US Travel €300.00
    Borneo Jungle Trip €160.00
NZ Car rental 3 weeks €300.00
    NZ Ferry €150.00
    Thai flights €100.00
    Cook Island Flights €320.00

Flights and any equipment are not included either.

Also, we are staying with family for roughly half of the US portion hence the lower cost per day.

    Any views?

    Thanks

Think it would be tough to survive on €40 a day in the US unless you really willing to slum it! I toured there for over a year, and was slumming it and spent much more than that.

I've been to south east asia twice, and did Angkor Wat and dont remember paying anything (maybe a few bhat to the cab driver) certainly not €60 (which is a fortune in cambodia).

Also did a jungle trek (several days) in northern thailand and NO WAY did i pay anything like €260. It was something tiny like €30-€40.

Have a look at the lonely planet guide for each destination - they all have a daily budget of €x-€Y which is supposed to include accomodation, food, typical local tours/trips and transport. Take the higher number to be conservative, multiply it by your days in each location, add in any "non-typcial" trips/tours (eg: any skiing, or scuba etc or anything mad/expensive), then a couple extra days for each location as contingency and you should have a fair idea of your budget.

    Cheers woofer,

Apparently there is now such a thing as a Pass for Angkor Wat. Maybe I'm misinformed. Re the treks thats an overall sum for ALL trekking that may be done in SE Asia. Also re US, I should have said we will have the free use of a car for that leg of the trip. Nonetheless you're right, that end of things is seriously underbudgeted :(

    Thanks for your reply.

you'll pay 20 dollars a night for accomodation in the US depending on the time of the year. Eating out is quite expensive enough. the best you could hope for is probably 10 dollars a day unless you cook yourself. If you plan on drinking expect to pay around 4-5 dollars a bottle/pint unless you go to dive bars. Or buy drink from the supermarket where it is quite cheap. After accommodation and food you'll probably be left with around 28 dollars to play around with a day with the exchange rate the way it is. More depending on how long you stay with family for. Some of which i'm sure will go on petrol.

there have always been passes for Angkor Wat. they come in 1, 3 and some other amount of days. the 3 day pass was 40 dollars. and if you bring your own photographs its a lot quicker. South East Asia is dirt cheap. 25 a day will be well enough. I'll only be in New Zealand for the first time next year and i was told to budget around 50 a day too. your budget looks okay. manageable at least.

Me and the missus are planning on doing something along these lines as well. Do you mind me asking how much you have budgeted overall(for everything) and are you getting a round the world ticket with someone like usit.ie?

Also I never thought of going to Japan, is there any particular reason your going or is it just for the sake of seeing Japan?

€25/day is definitely doable in SE Asia but tbh, I think you'd enjoy it more with ~€40/day.

SE asia is easily done at that money Vietnam average $22 us per night Cambodia is expensive bout $40 a night. Thailand no probs breach side air conn round €30. All are room rates.

I would recommend to get a hotel in Siem Reap in Cambodia with a pool and jacuzzi for relaxing after all the walking
