Saw a big ad for this in Nat Geographic:

    http://www.worldphotographyawards.org/

Entry categories for both amateurs and professionals, and eight different sub-categories within each of those.

Each (amateur) registrant can enter 3 pics, before 31st of Jan.

Best of all - it's FREE to enter! Sure why not? :)

    Probably referring to this:
3.6.7 By submitting an entry for the Contest, each contestant acknowledges that the Copyright remains that of the photographer. Any photograph used by the SONY World Photography Awards shall carry the photographer's credit line. Use may include, but is not limited to, publication in any WPA media or documentation. All entrants understand that any image submitted to the competition may be used by SONY World Photography Awards, and its Event Partners, for marketing and promotional purposes including, but not limited to, any media such as exhibitions, print and digital media directly related to the SONY World Photography Awards.

That's what I don't like about most of these things. They want you to give away total rights of the photo for them to use in any way they want.

While I probably have no chance of winning at all, it still bothers me.

If you ever looked at the MSNBC website, and submitting photos, their terms want even more from you, almost asking for blood.

Well that seems more reasonable than some comps. posted here recently. You'll always get a credit, and they'll only use it for materials relating the the competition? Better than seeing your photo, uncredited, advertising a breakfast cereal in 3 years time!!:D

That's the bit that confuses me... it seems like from the reading of the T&C that they can only use it in anything "directly related" to the Photography Awards...

then again it also contains the line "but not limited to" preceding that...

oh I didn't even look at the T&Cs. But someone always points out something in them when a competition is talked bout on here! :p

Yeah, I guess the terms in this case, seem better than most, using the images only in relation to the competition itself.

The way I look at, I'd be flattered if someone wants to use my pic for something, rather than nobody ever seeing it on flickr.

From a strictly amateurs POV of course. :)

Have to admit, i agree with this, especially if they credit you.

the Ts&Cs seem perfectly fine to me; copyright remains with the photographer, and they reserve the right to use the image in contexts directly related to the competition.

All entrants understand that any image submitted to the competition may be used by SONY World Photography Awards, and its Event Partners, for marketing and promotional purposes including, but not limited to, any media such as exhibitions, print and digital media directly related to the SONY World Photography Awards.

This is a real Eats, Shoots and Leaves/ Eats Shoots and Leaves thing...

My reading would be that they (including the partners) can use it for marketing and promotional purposes which may not be related to the SONY World Photography Awards.

    if you cut it down:-
for marketing and promotional purposes including, but not limited to, any media related to the SONY World Photography Awards

But as some people have said, they will credit you and they're not taking the copyright. And, if your picture is good enough it'll be seen by a lot of people!
