    Soldiers' internet video investigated
    Tuesday, 8 January 2008 15:08

Military police are investigating an internet video which appears to show members of the Defence Forces playacting with rifles while on peacekeeping duty in Lebanon last year.

The video, posted on YouTube, shows three soldiers with rifles dismounting from a personnel carrier and proceeding to jive to the Bee Gees song Stayin' Alive.

It also shows a larger group of soldiers walking with background pop music, as well as scenes of men exercising in a gym and taking showers.

This afternoon, a spokesman for the Defence Forces said the video had first been uploaded while the troops were in Lebanon. It was then taken down but posted again recently.

The spokesman said the posting of videos by soldiers on peacekeeping duties was an unwelcome trend and was not at all encouraged by the authorities.

On a more serious note - hot off the presses

Two Irish UN peacekeeping soldiers suffered minor injuries in a roadside bomb attack today in south Lebanon.

The Department of Defence confirmed the soldiers, who were two of just seven Irish personnel in the country, will be held in hospital overnight for observation.

The blast is reported to have smashed the windows of a white UN four-wheel drive vehicle at Ramiliya, an area approximately 35km South of Beirut, at 12.50pm Irish time.

Thankfully they dont seem to be too badly injured.

The RSB was not meant to kill but more to warn the UN that "Hizbollah" have'nt gone away you know ;)

Yeah, just heard that on the radio on the way home, thankfully it wasn't worse.

Unfortunately the Military Authorities don't have a sense of humour.

Are you under the impression that soldiers don't wash?:p

Probably a fine. The lad in the bush hat and shades will shortly be marking time in front of a very senior officer. This is not good.:(

I remeber seeing thid video some weeks ago on you tube, i thought i was one of the first to see it as it had only 200 views, it will propbably shoot up now due to recent publicity unless its taken down.

Was watching euro news story last night about those two soliders, its a releif to hear they are fine and recovering, the report i was watching was very brief and in spanish and i dont think they confirmed wether their injurys were seriose or not.

Ah good on the lads .We use to do that all the time with our FN rifles back in the 70s and 80s.

An FN rifle is a good substitution for a lead electric guitar 'jimme hendrix style'.

Only we didint have the benifit of you tube back then he he :)

Fair play to them, funniest thing I've seen in a long while :D. The stuffed shirts are bound to say something about it but hopefully nothing happens to the lads.

The military authorities can only prosecute the author of the clip, its not the fault of the other lads that he put it into the public domain.

Having said that its all in jest, no dolphins were hurt in the making of it and worst that will happen is a warning to the author or a reprimand if he's an NCO.

Unfortunetly our neighbours to the west (USA) have made this kind of prank into something a lot more sinister and I guess all military authorities will bare that in mind.

FWIW I sent the DF press office an email saying to the effect of "Lads, get a life." I mean, if they're worried about the impression on the public, the public response does not seem to be in synch with the Army's official position.

    NTM
