Is it acceptable to call in sick when you have, eg an eye test?

fairly certain that it isn't as you didn't 'have' to have your eye appointment at this time.

could you not just call in sick anyway and not mention the eye appointment?

why didn't you just arrange it outside work hours?

How much time would you need?
Would it be a problem to pop out during working hours for your eye test. This would be acceptable in my place of work anyway, we may or may not be required to make up the time depending of what we're working on.

Why don't you book it for 9am or 4pm and ask work to come in an hour late or leave an hour early? most companies won't have a problem with it, as long as you don't do it regularly. Or go on your lunch. Last time I went to the dentist I went on my lunch break because i'd just started with the company. You don't need to take a whole day off for an eye appointment, unless you really just want a day off!

If you work with a computer, your employer should also be paying for the eyetest.

A standard eye test will be covered by PRSI under the treatment benefit scheme anyway.
