PS3 making loud noises and scratching

    Hi
Got my ps3 for christmas and it was grand the first few days, but now when i turn it on, the fans kick in full blast until the ps3 is turned off. Also since this morning, when I start folding@home the ps3 makes weird scratching like noises and doesnt stop until folding@home is cancelled. The fan noise makes watching dvds impossible without headphones, and the fans can be heard at least 15 feet from the unit.

I rang Sony and was told that it is completly "normal" and that I should expect my ps3 to be as loud as a desktop computer................
I explained to her that the scratching sound is worrying (where she then said it is normal......) and then eventually she said that I should return it to Smyths (where I bought it, and where she did a quick stock check) and she told me that they will give me a BRAND NEW 60gb........ I mean c'mon, was this woman kidding me!!!???

Last and final twist to the story, we lost the receipt, but the ps3 was payed for with a Laser card, but apparently that is not good enough for smyths, as all they know is that we paid 499 at the games counter...i mean how many other items in the shop come to an even 499???

So anyway, does anybody know where I stand on this issue?? Surely I ust be entitles to at least a repair by Sony as the console has been purchasds less than 3 months ago. Any help ???:(

ya have proof of purchase so insist on a renewal and i'm sure they have some sort of system that records what was sold when, like a stock check system

I was going to run folding home ,but I read that it runs the PS3 flat out all the time. Causing premature hard drive wear.

I know folding home is a great idea ,but the ps3 is staying mine ,until I get my monies worth from it :D

folding uses the hdd alot that's normal the sound you get is what meant to happen the hard drive is a normal laptop ones that usage would be normal on a laptop the drive built for it,
ps3 usage is below whats normal.

hmmmmm. The loud scratching noise seems to have dissapeared. I read on other forums that its the cell actually making the noise because it is working so hard.........dunno if that is true. I left my ps3 folding all last night and all I could hear this morning was the fans. :D I think I can live with just the noise from the fans. I am once again a happy ps3 owner!!!

And about the laser card thing, just incase any1 is wondering :rolleyes:a bank statement SHOULD be sufficient as you lose your receipt. It is a form of proof of purchase so i have been told by the national consumer agency. If the store has a good sales system, than can easily verify your purchase.
