Can anyone recommend software (Windows based) for converting audiofrom DVD's to MP3 files. Free software would be great, but I am willing to pay for a good product

cant think of anything of the top of my head, besweet or headac3he are the ones i half remember.

google for "ac3 ripping" and then "ac3 to mp3"

i did this before with a few music dvds but it was a long time ago

Well, since this is your own home-made DVD's or ones that you own the copyright to Ripping is probably the wrong word.

In this case, virtualdub MPEG2 will do what yo need for free
