Brilliant place to visit - especially out of season. The earlier you go the less busy it will be.

All the clichéd stuff is well worth doing, the gondola trip, St Mark's, the Bell-tower etc. Also keep a look out for an opera performance in one of the pallazzi (spl?). We went to it in January and it was amazing, even for non-opera buffs. They stage a full opera in one of the grand old houses. Different acts/scenes take place in different rooms of the house and it's beautiful.

If you're used to Dublin prices eating out isn't too bad, especially if you avoid the area around St Mark's Square.

If you are really treating herself then look into staying at The Bauer Hotel. It's gorgeous and I got a great deal through lastminute.com (though that was a good while ago).

All that said, the best thing about Venice is walking around the city. It's just so spectacular.

    PS

If you can spare the cash (I think about €90) get a water taxi in from the airport. It's like being James Bond for 20 minutes.

that's from Marco polo airport, not treviso... unless your boat has wheels and is allowed on the motorway:p

The OP is flying into Treviso, so no option of a water taxi... It's bus or train from there to Venice.

Gondola is overrated and overpriced. You can haggle with some gondoliers, but not all. Better to take one of the ones that just crosses the grand canal.

St. Mark's Sq is great. The food market at Rialto Bridge is buzzing (only open in the morning). You can walk everywhere in the main part of Venice with little difficulty and you'll find lots of little piazzas and hidden jems.

If you want to be really touristy go to Murano, but I wouldn't bother. If you're on a budget and stopping for coffees, take them at the counter and you'll save a fortune. Taking coffee on the terraces outside makes the price sky-rocket!

treviso is a nice little town (at least the centre is) so you could spend a while there, there are two options from treviso airport; the ryanair bus that takes an hour or the train from treviso station which takes approx 30 minutes but of course its about 2 miles from the airport to the station.

the only advice i can give for venice is just to take it at your own pace, you are going to get lost no matter what, forget the maps just walk/stroll around for a few hours and take it in, explore the back alleys, we spent an hour sitting next to a deserted docking clamp on the canal just watching the boats go by, only one person came down the alley in that whole time (so much different than the touristy spots )

eventually you will find St marks, Rialto Bridge etc by wandering, a trip up to the top of the campanile bell tower in st marks square is a must do

i agree about the advice of not looking at the map and just getting lost. it's a small city and you'll always find your way back when you need to. Another thing i highly recommend is getting lost after dark. Venice is dead and empty by 11, so going for a midnight stroll is just amazing and incredibly eery.
