Copying compact discs on to computers or MP3 players will become legal for the first time under UK government proposals to be published on Tuesday, in a move that the music industry has warned could "open the floodgates" to further file-sharing. Millions of people already copy their favourite albums on to their MP3 players or PCs without necessarily knowing that they are breaking the law. But this commonplace activity will no longer be illegal under the changes suggested by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. The Association of Independent Music has warned that the move could open the floodgates to "uncontrolled and unstoppable" private copying and sharing from person to person.

I don't understand how saying this protects their profits?? Everyone already copies their CD's to their Mp3 players anyway?? No-one is going to stop because some Association says its illegal? Its unenforceable, and not a single person has ever or will be ever prosecuted for it...

It may not directly protect their profits, but it maintains the status quo. It keeps us one step further away from liberalising the industry (which would be a bad thing for everyone).
