Warranty/NCT Questions

    Happy new year to all,

I'm going to view a 2005 registered car later today and am just wondering what is the general warranty a dealer would give? 12 months? The dealer tells me that the car is covered by the manufacturer's warranty until May, and that he will give me 3 months on engine & gearbox after that. Should I insist on a full warranty for 12 months?

Also, I forgot to ask him was the car NCT'd. AFAIK a car is first NCT'd when it is two years old? So should I ask him to have it NCT'd before I buy?

    Thanks.

The only reason I can see for buying from a dealer is the warranty. I would push him to give you an extra 3 months on the engine and gearbox. The remainder of the manufacturer's warranty will cost the dealer relatively nothing in the event of a problem as the manufacturer will cover the cost. So his warranty and his risk only starts the day after that. This is most likely incorporated into the selling price of the car.

If he is unwilling to budge then I would give a private sale of a similar age car some serious consideration. A private sale will cost less than a garage and will still be covered for the duration of the manufacturer's warranty. The savings made on the private sale could be put towards any potential repairs encountered.

I reckon the savings could outway the risk in this situation.

I'm with bazz on this one. A 3 months engine / gearbox warranty is a bit mean on a 3 year old car (even though you get the remaining 4 months manufacturers warranty first)

I'd ask for a 12 month full warranty (so 8 months from the dealer after the manufacturers warranty expires)

    Lads,

I'm totally with you all on your views on this one, thanks for the replies. I'm definitely going to insist on the full 12 months warranty or else just walk away. That should be hard for him to let me do as I have a cash deal.

And NCT not due until next year, it's all good.

    Cheers.

VVTi petrol Avensis use a timing chain so it shouldn't need to be changed.
