    Just read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.torrent

You download the .torrent file in a browser. Then you use a bittorrent client to use the torrent file. For example Azureus or "u" torrent . The speed you are able to download at depends on how fast your own internet connection is and the number of seeders/leechers (the number of people uploading/downloading the file). Torrent files are often associated with pirated media such as films, games and music but there are many legitimate files made available like this. be wary of trojans and viruses in bedded.

I wrote a little guide in an e-mail to explain it to friends and family members. Probably not perfect (and possibly outdated) but there ya go:
First.. a bit about BitTorrent to explain exactly how it works:

BitTorrent is fairly easy to explain. It works on the basis of seeds and peers.

Seeds = people who have the file
Peers = people downloading the file from seeds

The more seeds available for a file, the faster you'll typically get the file.

When you are downloading a file, you need to upload a certain amount
of the same file while you are downloading it. Sharing is caring, if
you know what i mean! :D

To start, download a torrent client... i recommend uTorrent
(www.utorrent.com) as it's small and very easy on the memory usage.

Downloads will be fairly slow at first but will typically increase over time.

Oh.. and another things... try downloading a healthy file (something
that you know will be popular) temporarily and see
the speed it downloads at. If it doesn't increase about 4 - 6KB after
a couple of minutes.. you may need to set up port forwarding on the you may need to set up port forwarding on the
    router (http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm).
