Dont know the firmware of mine, but it failed. I have a gen1 macbook, about 18 months and it failed. Wouldnt mind but I had literially just bought a network hard drive the week before.

Anyway, got a sata hard drive in peats for shag all and used time machine to get everything back to normal, but even the new one is starting to make a 'clicking' noise

wh00t, doesn't bother me, i got a hitachi drive in mine which i took out immedialately and threw in a WD.

hitachi should stick to making forklifts and power tools.
