Im 18 and have full licence, but the online systems wont give me quote, sayin ya hav t call up. Any idea how much it would be for the week. By the way, anyone been to L.a/Hollywood, what did ya think?

AFAIK, driving age in California is 21. AFAIK, Avis / Hertz etc wont allow you to drive on a foreign license if under 23 generally.. some of the are strict and require 25. Ring them to double check. BTW, you have to have your full license for 2 full years too before they will insure you... Not sure how much they inforce that rule either.

To put it bluntly with the exception of maybe Universal Studios or Disneyland, LA is a complete kip and best to be avoided (Don't get me started about Hollywood).

Have a scroll through this forum, there are plenty of threads on LA and West Cost USA (I did request a sticky for West Cost but never mind). There are a few tips on much nicer places close to LA that may be a better option for you.

I'll give you a word of advice. If you do go to L.A and are out driving, make sure you keep your car doors locked, especially if you are anywhere near areas like Compton or Crenshaw. Car jacking is a massive threat around these areas.

i agree with keefg, it is not worth travelling 11 hours on a plane just to go to LA; san diego, san francisco and without question las vegas are much better options.

public transport in los angeles is no worse than in say dublin from my experience

I hear if you go anywhere near east LA you better be fluent in Spanish.

Go to San Diego or San Francisco instead. Driving around LA as well is like nothing you will have experienced in a car before. It can be quite scary at first, but I got to almost enjoy it in a way after a bit.

    LA is a kip anyways.

My one tip for driving in LA - get Sat Nav. Although you might have trouble getting a car if you're only 18.. We rented with Alamo, but as far as I know it's 25 with them..
