Just wondering what peoples views are on this model?

And does any one know whether they have a timing belt or timing chain?

    Thanks

great car and a great engine but im a bit biased LOL

i have the 4,4 V8 and i love it, but the 04 onwards 3.0 diesel is the new engine as far as im aware, meaning 235bhp and shed loads of torque.

make sure you get a nice colour and a very good spec as these buggers will be hard to sell in a few years and you will need the better spec to sell imo.

i looked for TV, sat nav, DVD front and back, PDC front and back, running boards, bi-xenon lights, leather a must, electric and memory seats, bluetooth if possible (i havent got this, and its the one extra i wish i had!).

best of luck with your search.

Yes, its a chain...........Stright 6 diesel power plant same as the one in any 530d. Lovely engine, bag of power and bullitproof.

    enjoy your selection........:p

I'm on my second one and never had any problems, in fact I'd say it the best 4x4 I've driven even better than the Audi Q7 I have. It's more like a car to drive than a jeep tbh.

Good news, you can have it, and relatively cheaply. OK the names will not display on the Sat Nav/TV screen but you will be able to control it from the multifunction steering wheel controls:

You need to buy a Parrot Car Kit CK3000 too, but still you can get the the whole lot for under €200 if you shop around (EBay/other web sites etc.)

Try here for the whole package:

Thinking of buying one, got it out on a trial run for the weekend, absolutely astounded by the power, comfort they have! Ive fallen in love with it and have to have one.

But there is a one problem with this one that ive out on trial, when its going up and down through the gears sometimes, its seems to kick back out at me. Bit worrying if ya ask me.

Apart from that every thing else is fine!

Was it popping out of 2nd gear? If so the gearbox is goosed.

no its an automatic, the jeep would kinda jump when driving if ya no what i mean?

its seems to happen more so when your coming to a halt by breaking, just when its stops, its takes a bit of a jump.

Have a good look into the set up as mentioned above. You can get a kit that makes the installation really simple. The Connects2 kit (there are other companies making similar kits e.g. Autoleads) is virtually plug and play, it comes with proper BMW plugs that the original radio connections piggy back on. It relays the sound throught the car's front speakers, does the mute function etc. So there's no cutting of wires required.
You can get a similar adapter for a Nokia CK-7W bluetooth kit (which is what I have) but the adapter to allow the integration with a MFSW cost over STG £179 (which I don't have)

    Nokia Version
    Or

great system, i think to be honest i would be happy with the nokia CK-7W kit. we got a good price from expansys for €85 if we bought 5 kits or so. MFSW option would be great, but i cant justify it.

Sorry, off topic I know, but I got the same (or similar) kit from http://www.fitbluetooth.co.uk/ who were great to deal with. I installed it myself in about 20 mins. Great solution for full bluetooth connectivity and multi-function wheel.

Just for my info, why so?

Just for my info, why so?

well for starters they are a big, gass guzzling, high tax cars.

but in saying that, as they start becomming more and more affordable, the initial price will outway the running costs, so just my opinion of course.

€130 - €150 per key, 3-4 days, VIn & VLC & ID needed to get them done in Main Dealers.

and pay 2k tax a year? Surely a 3.0D would be better value, but then again those 4.4petrols are available in the uk for 10 to 12 k sterling now?

    They are tempting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,974 ✭✭✭mick.fr

Why is that the only question I heard from this board when it comes to speak about bimmers service is the timing belt/chain issue?

I mean they are important, especially the belt one on small engines, but seriously making sure a BMW has been serviced properly is far beyond checking the timing belt only.

I really do not know where is this persistence's coming from here.

Like this guy who posted an answer to the red 5 series on Adverts.ie a couple of weeks ago, his only question about service was only about the timing belt. Come on.

You wouldn't be paying €2k if was registered in Ireland before July 1st, 2008 rates below:

    2,901 to 3,000 1,231 683 347 123.10

    3,001 or more 1,491 827 421 149.10

    So €260 difference between the 3.0 & the 4.4.

All you'll ever need to know.

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=44

Worth noting that the auto gearboxes are sealed for life from BMW but honest john recommend cracking them open to change the oil every 60k otherwise the gearbox won't last past 120k.

Other than that they are a pointless car - a waste of fuel, metal, road surface and roadspace, all to pander to someones ego. The ultimate pen1s extension.

Not 100% accurate the way you maintain a BMW gearbox.
If you only do that, you will break your gearbox right away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,290 ✭✭✭Ferris

If you read the link it says to get a specialist to do it, i'd trust their experience myself if I had a BMW with an auto. I'd certainly ask the question.

Off topic, Audi sealed for life auto's last even less time by all accounts.

A BMW specialist does not exist in Ireland.
And if you ask BMW they will tell you a Gearbox does not need to be maintained.
As a matter of fact changing the filter and do a partial and careful flush of the oil at 60k will extend the life of your gearbox.

 I think the salient point is that sealed for life gearboxes have a certain lifespan. The OP wants to know about these cars and my advise would be not to buy one with an auto and 110k miles on it without a warranty just in case the gearbox sh1ts the bed. There are, i am sure, plenty of compotent mechanics in Ireland to check the gearbox in the manner you describe.

If you have to have an X5 the manuals are probably bulletproof and slightly less of a planet killer but they are rare.

Well really it depends of the gearbox you have as well.
If you have a GM (Not sure on the X5), with 110k it would be very much risky as they have a proven breakage rate of about 30% (1/3 broke before 100k).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,147 ✭✭✭E92

Not very many "sealed for life" gearboxes do the job intended from what I've read and seen in various car programmes. Most need an oil change at some time or another is what they all seem to be saying.

As an aside note the gearbox is not a BMW gearbox, like most BMWs the X5's box is made by the German company ZF(who also supply gearboxes to VAG, Jaguar and Merc amongst others).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭niceirishfella

ZF also do a lot of steering racks too which have given up the ghost in my experience, but overall ZF are a good maker of components.
Sometimes stuff just goes wrong - regardless of the maker.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,974 ✭✭✭mick.fr

A ZF is fine, not a GM, lots of issues with this brand.
