Combined FTA Satellite/UHF Aerial installation

Hi, Based in Ballincollig/Ovens Co.Cork so the nearest terrestrial transmitter is Spur Hill. Been rooting around the forums so I think what I want to do should be possible.

    1) AERIAL: Want to get RTE1/2/TV3/TG4 on aerial from Spur Hill which is UHF C/D horizontal polarization.
    - Guess I need an aerial something like this http://www.peats.com/cgi-bin/test_new/catalog.cgi?view_product=1&id=6324

    - Should it be turned narrow way up as in the pic in the link for horizontal polarization?

    - I May want to install in the loft, in which case is a masthead amp a good idea?

    - Any recommendations for suppliers of aerials etc.? Dwyer's Electrical?

    2) FTA Satellite: Want to combine the aerial signal with a satellite signal on a single downlink cable to the TV in the front room. Seems like a combiner at either end is the way to go. Have seen this http://www.satellite.ie/acatalog/Satellite_UHF_VHF_Cable_Combiner.html and this http://www.donberg.ie/descript/d/diplexer_02.htm

    - Any idea what the difference is between the two? Which would you recommend?

    - If using a masthead amp for the UHF aerial, is it still possible to feed the power to the aerial via the combiners or should power fed direct to the amp with the combiners downstream of that point?

    Thanks

thats a wide band aerial, you need a c/d aerial.

you might be able to pick up bbc/itv/c4 as well.. many house in ballincollig have this, but they need a second uhf aerial pointing in a different direction.

(look at some of the houses near the rugby pitch in ballincollig , they have 2 uhf aerials)

In my house we have the RTE signal combined with the sky cable, this runs into the sky box and it is split after it exits the sky box and the erial lead is plugged into the aerial socket in the wall, and the signal (rte+tv3+sky) is sent up around the house.

i dont know what gadgets and gizmos were used.. but it is possible

Thanks for the feedback. I'm guessing anyone with 2 UHF aerials has one for RTE1/2/TV3/TG4 and the other for the SCTV analogue system for BBC1/2/ITV/C4 although I thought that was going off air with the launch of their digital system. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the way they're pointed though.

I'd say that grid aerial would work grand, being wideband though it works at its best on Group B. As it's pictured in the link is Horizontal.

If you intend installing in the loft, I suggest you try it without an amplifier first in case signals are sufficient.

    2) Ideally, it'd be best to have satellite and terrestrial running down two seperate drops of cable, but if this is not possible, then use the combiner in satellite.ie link (I get a feeling that the one on Donberg is a basic splitter as it has powerpass on both legs) and yeah, you'd need 2 of these to combine and seperate.

If you do use a masthead amp, the PSU for it will need to be in the attic also, before the combiner. The Combiner will only allow powerpass for the satellite STB and dish.
