I dont know what it is. I cant put my finger on it but ive visited many sites like this in the UK but none anywhere near as big as this with the exception of one. However thats very much for simpletons. Anyway what is it? Is it the scope of topics? The humour, having a laugh? The mods? Why have Irish people (remember we live in a small country) taken to boards so much when much bigger countries have sites like this that just dont match in terms of size? Knock yourselves out!;)

Everyone's just waiting for their chance to be the first to say YORE MA! in a thread.

    Hmmm that was an anticlimax.

Presumably in other countries like england and the USA there is far more choice available and has been for longer, so maybe it's because for a long time boards was the only (or largest) Irish website of its kind and people got used to it so failed to move on when other options became available, whereas in other countries the dispersion of people across the different forums is greater.

Compared to all the other sites like this in the UK etc....everyone on here is gorgeous / witty / intelligent / knowledgeable and down right fun to interact with.*

So I reckon it's just "right sized"... small enough that you can recognise the regulars and large enough to support a wide range of topics.

If certain sections/forums of boards start to grow significantly larger then they may start spawning off new websites, much like the old "For Sale" forum here spawned www.adverts.ie

I'm fairly certain adverts.ie had more to do with the keyword adverts than it did with its relevant size on boards.ie.

Because the people on here are, in general, sane, which is more than can be said for most of the rest of the internet.

I don't think its THAT popular.

The old MSN chatroom's, now they were popular.

    Porn sites are really popular.

When the Irish Quake Forum couldn't be hosted on a iol account John Breslin offered to take over the hosting. It just sort of grew because there was always a lot of non quake related topics discussed. It got to the point where there was so much activity that it was a good idea to start giving particular subjects there own forum.

I have to admit the 98-2000 was fun because pretty much everyone posting had met in real life. I _think_ how boards got its name was that the iol forum was run by software called wwwboards

The only stupid discussions I've seen here were entertaining, Thats more to do with bein Irish I reckon, and the intelligent discussions were even helpfull. Its a pretty cool site to be fair. The mods do a good job of crackin down on the bull**** and nutters too. That helps keep them off the grass

the really wide range of topics and interests, and how it's all available on one board. im a very active member on a number of international baords, but i do love the sense of humour, and even teh squabbles on here, there is definitely a different style to the two than on my international ones. then there's the beers, where it's a lot easier to put faces to names etc.
