What would I need to go skiing?

I'm thinking about going skiing in Livigno in early March but am just trying to figure out what it would cost me first. I know I can rent the skiis, boots, glasses, sticks. Afaik I would have to buy the rest.
I've been looking at gear and don't really know what's what, like a parka for example, is it a jacket, something you wear instead of a jacket or with a jacket?
I assume that as im not planning on turning pro I may not need everything, so just wondering what stuff I really should buy?

    Thanks

Colly, your best bet is to ask around and borrow what you can.

sallopetts ( I dont use them and very few of my friends use them, but it depends on how good your bottoms are)
    Bottoms (Rent)
    Jacket (Rent)
    Gloves (Rent, maybe)
football socks (You can get cheap ski socks, football socks would be too thick and would hold moisture rather than pushing it away {not 100% on this)
    Goggles (Buy probably)

    What date are you going?

Thinking of going in early March for the week, it's all down to cost really. I can't find anywhere that you can rent jackets/bottoms etc... I googled it and all the rental places don't come up with anything. Any idea of a site?

keep and eye out for aldi and Lidl offers. They've been doing ski gear on and off over the past 2 months. My brother got a jacket that looks grand. €60. It has yet to be tested on the slopes but it looks fine.

    You'd also need a hat.

Also Rambler's Way have some jackets on sale and you can normally get them to knock down the price a bit if you buy everything with them. TK Maxx is also good.

For Livigno in March I'd say you need,

    Salopettes ~ €50

Jacket ~ €50-75 - if you have a decent walking jacket that's Gore-Tex or something similar you could just get a fleece in Dunnes to go under and you'd be grand I think.

Polonecks/Long Sleeved T shirts - Dunnes are selling these at the moment and I think they have a sale on.

    Gloves/Mittens ~ €25

Hat - you probably have one, I know they've hats in Dunnes for €3

Goggles/Sunglasses, buy the goggles there if you feel you need them, I don't think you will in March though, sunglasses should be fine.

Might not need this but I like to have a neck gaiter. They're about a tenner.

YOU NEED SKI SOCKS WITH HEELS!!! DO NOT USE FOOTBALL SOCKS! You'll be really uncomfortable. Ski socks are expensive but I think they've 20% off them in Arnotts and Pamela Scott Ski Shop is good for them too. Please do not use football socks, all they'll do is make you uncomfortable and make you hate skiing!

Cheers for the advice, when you say I won't need goggles do you mean it's unlikely to snow? Is early march a bad time/not the best for skiing?

No, I would think he means you dont have to buy Goggles unless you need them, alot of people just use Sunglasses instead of googles. If you just use Sunglasses it will cut down on your cost.

Early March is fine, Im going myself then.

Best place to get cheap, top quality, skiing gear is TKMAXX. They had loads of stuff last month when I was there.

    I'm a girl :(

And yeah, I mean you probably won't need them. Been to Livigno in March before and heading there this year on March 15th. It didn't snow when I was there but the snow was great, loads of it, no worries!

Correct me if I'm wrong here but would a pair of sunglasses that are suitable for skiing not be more expensive than a pair of goggles? I love my goggles and then only cost €39. Would glasses for the same price not fog up alot? And when you fall.... and you will fall.... The sunglasses would be more breakable than the goggles?

Am I alone in my opinion or does anyone agree?

    First off Apologies Tywy!!

@ShayK1, No I agree with you. My point was that generally alot of people have sunglasses that they use all year round. So if you have a decent pair of Sunglasses then you could use them instead of buying Goggles if you wanted to save on Cost.

As far as the Sunglasses \ Googles debate which to use, I find alot Skiers use Sunglasses because well they dont fall that much. Where as Snowboarders tend to fall more so they use Goggles. Personally I only wear goggles, as you mentioned I think that once you move off the Nursery slopes or into your second week you tend to have much bigger falls and are alot more prone to catching an edge and face planting yourself.

I prefer goggle because I find if it's in anyway cold and if I go in anyway fast, my eyes run like mad!

And yes, that was my point, that one might have sunglasses lying around. You don't have to spend that much, I believe those €15 sunglasses in Champion Sports are suitable although they may not look that nice.

    Static_M.e. - don't worry! I thought you were a girl :P ... oops...

from my personal experience, when I was first learning, I fell alot and then the glasses fell off if it was a big fall. They got wet and snowy and then they scured my vision... so I put them into my pocket. Then I fell again.... broken glasses!!! Now I only wear goggles.

    FYI:

I found a ski shop in maynooth the other day. Seems cheap enough. They've alot of Dare2be jackets and pants. Goggles were around €30, base layers and neck gators were around €10.
Didn't see helmets or Boards or skis or boots but they've a good bit of clothing

Yeah a friend of mine faceplanted last year and ended up smashing his googles and busting his nose.

He had just got a new freestyle board, was crusing down a nice blue, caught his front edge and was literally thrown about 10 feet threw the air where he faceplanted the ground. I was coming up behind him and nearly fell over from laughing so much.. all you could see where his lines through then snow, then perfect snow, then my friend making snow angels ;) I wish I had got a picture..

Anyway back on topic, the goggles stayed in one piece even though they had been smashed, its that of thing that scares me about Sunglasses and boarding. I think if your going to be buying either way get Goggles.

@tywy  Im going to have to start spending more time in Beer Guts & Receding Hair..
