Wireless Router - What to buy?

    I have always had broadband connected direct to my desktop. I have now got a laptop as well and I want to use a wireless router. There are a lot of different models/specs/ranges etc available.
    I would really appreciate some info/comments on what is available and its benefits / shortcommings.
    Hopr I am in the right forum, if not fell free to move this to another thread.

    Have a read/search through the Wireless forum. As far as brands go: avoid Belkin (Terrible products with terrible support). Linksys or D-Link are usually a safe enough bet.

    What type of router will you need? Are you on ADSL, broadband from a cable provider, fixed wireless?

    Brand wise, I'd recommend Linksys or Netgear.

    Its BT Broadband.
    Do terms like "High speed" and Improved range" etc, have any importance?
    or are they more loke sales speel.?

    They're little more than vague sales pitch. Some manufacturers claim speed and distance boosts when their kit is used in conjunction with more of their kit i.e. Linksys and their Speedboost.

    Right, an ADSL modem then. If you want wireless, look for the b/g standard. The faster n standard is still being drafted but if higher speeds over wifi are important to you then, by all means, go for that. The only thing is that that equipment could be obsolete by the time the n standard is finalised.

    You can 'upgrade' your existing modem to a wireless one, directly with BT Sales. Just call them. It will cost EUR45, onto your next bill. Call took 2 minutes.
    Once you are fully set up with the new one, you simply post back their old one to a freepost address provided.
    Don't know which wireless router they provide -but at least it will be supported via the one local service provider

    I was supplied with a Netgear WGR614 from NTL. Easy to set up and not a minutes trouble in over 1 year. Could even use my notebook out in the back garden last summer... (I think it was 2 days in May...:rolleyes:) Nice looking pice of kit too... :D
