The screen on my digital camera broke while I was on holidays recently. When I brought it into a camera shop I was told it could cost up to €200 to repair. As this is possibly more than the camera is worth does anyone know if it's possible to buy the screen online and install it myself? It wouldnt matter too much if I messed it up as more than likely i'll end up throwing away the camera and buying another one if I can't find a cheaper way of fixing it

It sounds like it could be complicated to do yourself, what kind of camera is it? And i would say the guy in the camera shop was trying to get you to buy a new camera, by saying it would cost more than it's worth to fix.

An Olympus FE 160, would be less than €150 to buy a new one

Checked ebay no lcd screens on there,
id say you would have alot of trouble fixing it,
Unless you're really good with electronics?
I took apart my old hp compact before(Dust in the lense)and it was fairly hard to do.An lcd would be easier take off the casing and unscrew the lcd from the body and disconnect a few cable's but i would still be hard.Maybe look out for one of these for spares or repairs in the buy and sell you might pick up a cheap one thats been dropped, and the lense has been smashed up or something. But they would'nt come along too often. So its up to you

Yeah i'm not too hopeful of finding one, i've bought a new better camera but this one was barely used and working perfectly apart from the screen so I could give it to one of my friends or someone that would use it

I've changed the lcd on a phone before so I can't imagine this being a lot different, and if it doesn't work i've got nothing to lose as I certainly won't be paying any €100 or more to get it repaired

On another forum someone suggested putting it in the freezer, has anyone ever heard of that?

Can't you still keep using it, just by taking pictures and seeing how they come out? The one thing I miss about digital photography is the surprise when a picture you took a while back finally gets developed and looks great (well, compared to the 23 other blurred, overexposed disasters on the film).

Yeah I could, there isn't any view finder on it though so i'd have to use guess where to point it

disposable electronics my friends... it's cheaper to buy a new one than to get the existing one repaired.

Is the screen itself broken, as in physically cracked with stuff leaking out, or did it just stop displaying images? Either way you shouldn't have too much difficulty repairing it, make sure you have a full set of screwdrivers, tri-wings and all before you start, they love to throw odd little screws inside the case to prevent DIY repairs.
Can't find a replacement screen online, you might have more luck if you open it up and find the screen part no, and manufacturer on the screen itself, you can usually find those on the back of the LCD, though they may be covered by a thin metal casing. Hope this helps.
