GPU comparison query

Hi all,

Im upgrading the graphics card in my laptop coz my old one is fried due to overheating. The only 2 that are compatible are the radeon mobility 9700 and the radeon mobility 9800.

I have searched the net on the comparisons between the two, which are below:

I can purchase the 9700 new for 100euro from the UK or get the 9800 for 175euro from the UK.

Will the drop of 100Mhz in "Clock Speed" have a dramatic effect on performance for the 9800 gpu?

Is the 9800 worth spending the extra money on? and will it boost my game performance much?

what laptop is it? the majority of graphics cards in laptops are not removable.

The 9800M is way better, but both are ancient and dropping close to 250 on such outdated hardware would be ludicrous.

Agreed , old card - rediculous price, extended effort of having to open and try and replace the card in the laptop on top of it all, is it worth it?!

hey, thanx for replying to my query so soon. I understand the price is ludacris for outdated hardware; but aside from that, would the 9800M be a far superior graphics card than the 9700M?

After all, I only want to play games like pro evo, half life, fifa08, doom3, virtua tennis. Apart from fifa08, these games ran nice and smoothly on the 9700M. However fifa08 was a little jittery. Would the 9800M sort this jitteryness out?

Spend as little as possible. Both really old.

you should really consider picking up a new laptop. i definitely wouldnt spend that kind of money on an old graphics card

I guess its 100 vs 500/600 isn't it.

500/600 for a new computer? Definitely not for a laptop that can handles up to date games. And for a pc?,.. the most basic XPS from Dell is around €900. I dont mind the cost, im just wondering if the 9800M is a better card than the 9700M ?

I know its better in every area bar the core clock speed. However, even considering this, is the 9800M better overall for running games? (even if they are the older games)

You never said you wanted to play the latest games. Both of these cards are obsolete. It makes no sense to pay more than 100. Thats not so you'll be able to play games but so that the laptop is usable. If thats not your aim then go buy something else. For example

Agreed. Im not sure what your priorities are either.

Also, be wary that a faster graphics card will probably run hotter than your old one so your overheating problems could come back again before long.

Yeah but it's sterling, not euro, for the 9800M you're looking at almost 250 euro - and in a day and age where even certain integrated graphics are actually as good as if not better then the mobility 9800 (X1250)

Oh wait sorry - he said euro - I just saw 'from the UK' and thought it was sterling. Not remotely as bad as I thought it was then, but still, personally wouldn't bother.

€175 for a 9800 (and not even a full-blown one but a mobile) is plain wacko. If you want to get said laptop working again, get the VERY cheapest compatible card on the planet! And if you want to game, pick up a new laptop - probably €800+ for anything with even a half-assed GPU (Go8600GT upward). Brutal, but its the price you pay for mobility :rolleyes:
