Lads, a trivia question was put to me tonight and it's wrecking my head.

What player won an All Ireland (football) title against a player and lost an All Ireland against the same player.

That suggests an intercounty transfer but the only transfers I can think of off the top of my head are Sean Lowry (Offaly to Mayo); Declan Darcy (Leitrim to Dublin) and Tomas Tierney (Galway to Mayo), none of whom would have played in finals after their transfers (and in the case of Darcy no final at all [I think]).

    Can anyone enlighten me?

If I'm reading the question correctly it could be any Kerry player who finished on the winning side against Dublin in 75 and then played against the same players but lost in the 76 final?

Many players have played for more than one county. Anyway, the question, as you put it, does not necessarily mean they played for a different county. The same two teams appearing in more than one All-Ireland against each other, with each winning one would provide lots of players that would satisfy the criteria as you've put it. Kerry and Dublin have been mentioned, but other modern ones would be Offaly and Kerry or Cork and Meath.

Even if you replace "player" with "team" it would be the same. So it must be won a title with one player/team and lost a title against the same player/team. There is nothing in the modern era that would satisfy it, but I am sure it could be from the earlier part of the 20th century.

Sorry lads, I had a few pints on board when I posted. What it should have said was what player won a final on the same team as a particular player and lost a final against the same player.

    It's been driving me insane.

    Jest? Why?

Crossmaglen is in Armagh, Kieran McGeeney played for Na Fianna and also played for Armagh.

Yeah, think I read it wrong. Looks like McGeeney's your man so.

Sure didn't Enda and Justin McNulty not also play on the same Na Fianna and Armagh teams?

At that time Enda Mc Nulty, and I think his brother, were playing for Ballyboden as far as I know.

McGeeney doesn't add up cos Armagh beat Kerry in the All Ireland and I reckon Jayo and Mick Galvin were the only Na Fianna players at that time with a winners medal from 1995. It could be tied to UCD - they have players who won the Dublin c'ship last year and then played against them eg Niall McNamee for Rhode - but Rhode lost the Leinster final.

I think the question needs a bit of clarification tbh.

Yeah, the question isn't exactly clear but I think McGeeney is right. He lost an AI Club final with Na Fianna against Crossmaglen in 2000. He then went on to win the AI in 2002 with Armagh with some (/practically all :p) of those players from Crossmaglen.

Fair play Citeog - wasn't looking at it that way but it is a good shout alright. I reckon there must be a few more - you think?
