Its more or less the fare you'll pay all year round (except notable periods) if you shop around.

I've been to ny and chicago direct quite a few times over the past few years. 360 all inc is the most ive payed and 240 the least.

    Shop around.

Paid roughly the same for flights with aer lingus last year.

I'm looking for cheap flights to LAX in July... Just checked aerlingus, €1600 for 2 return. Mental!!!

US Airways don't fly direct to JFK ?

There has been lots of problems with flying with Delta Airlines. Flights dublin to JFK over booked and that sort of nonesence. Loads of people where on to Talk to Joe recently about it..flights over booked on their return journeys and not being able to get on another flight till 2 or 3 days later..Maybe its worth the extra dollars to fly airlingus.

Well the flights I was booking were only half full at the time, I'll take my chances and save myself €200 thanks! Don't most airlines overbook flights anyway? We'll just have to check in early. Sure an extra couple of days in NY wouldn't bother me!

I'm heading to NYC in two weeks with Delta.. Heard about the overbooking scheme they run... Contacted them about it, eventually got them to admit they overbook. After more hassle n strongly worded emails got my seats confirmed n an email stating that my seats will be guaranteed and that if they are canceled i'm entitled to a full cash refund instead of the Delta Dollars(vouchers) they usually hand out....

That happened to us when we were coming back from florida via philly they offered us free roundtrip flights if we went philly-manchester-dublin rather than philly-Dublin. Free anywhere flights YES PLEASE.

I usually use sites like sidestep, ebookers etc to see which airlines are offering good deals and then go direct.

I thought airlines were no longer allowed to over book flights

Oh they can overbook... what they now have to do (if the flight goes to / from Europe) is stump up cash or cash equivalent (not vouchers!!!) when they do. Needless to say if you are at Delta's excuse for an international terminal at JFK (T2) I doubt they'll have a clue what you're talking about in the queue you'll probably join outside the terminal...

The otherwise useless ECC advice center has this on their website:

    http://www.eccdublin.ie/topics/air_travel.html#overbooking

    "Denied boarding due to over-booking

Under EC Regulation 261/2004 when a flight is overbooked the airline must call on passengers to volunteer their seats to other passengers. If volunteers come forward they are entitled to financial compensation for not boarding which is agreed between the airline and passenger. The volunteers are also entitled to choose between an alternative flight or a refund of the ticket. If not enough volunteers come forward the airline can refuse to board passengers but must offer these passengers compensation for their inconvenience as follows:

    * €250 for flights of 1,500km or less
    * €400 for intra-community flights of more than 1,500km or for other flights between 1,500km and 3,500km
    * €600 for all other flights
    * and an alternative flight or refund of the ticket and overnight accommodation if necessary while waiting for an alternative flight and food, refreshments and access to telephone/e-mail/etc in reasonable proportion to the length of the wait.
    * Passenger injury and death due to flight problems :
Under the Montreal Convention 1999 and Council Regulation EC 2027/97 on Air Carrier Liability in the event of accidents , a passenger is entitled to compensation in case of an accident on board, embarking or disembarking the airplane. Up-front payments can be made if needed to help the passenger with immediate economic hardship."

I wouldn't waste your time trying to get the ECC to help chase for money, if the airline doesn't pay up, small claims court them

got 400delta dollars, a night in the holiday inn and bumped to first class to take a flight from atlanta to gatwick-dublin, instead of the direct flight.

totally worth it, got a day in atlanta extra and got to go to the martin luter king centre.

    www.aerlingus.com ?

just put in the standard details ... shannon to new york ...

it came back with a few different details ...

they were adding on 50 quid fuel charge ... I think for going from shannon to dublin then to jfk ... EEK

put in your dates and see whats around that time :) go with the cheapest option assuming you're flexible .. think it was 89 one way

Around ten years ago, my parents, my brother and I went to Portugal from Gatwick (lived there) with BA.

We were late to checkin, and the flight (11am) was overbooked, and we were offered:

-£300 per adult and £150 per child, in cash
    -a hotel room
    -fancy lunch in the hotel
-first class seats on the next flight, only 5 hours later

I could only half remember it, but dad told me about it again since. Unreal! What chance of Ryanair doing that these days???

Personally i'd rather spend that little bit extra and fly with Aer Lingus/British airways/Virgin etc if flying transatlantic.

Never flew Delta transatlantic but US Airways are a complete disaster. Uncomfortable planes, bad inflight entertainment and remind me of a certain Ryanscair.

Having said that, great deal if you're not as picky as me.

Last Feb myself and my wife flew with Delta from SNN to Las Vegas via Atlanta, Las Vegas to Portland OR via Salt Lake City and from Portland back to SNN, again via Atlanta over a 2 week hol.
We found delta to be excellent, flight staff were brilliant and we had never any issues with overbooking or late flights. We pre-booked all our seats and checked in on-line before our trans-atlantic flights and I am a stickler for turning up and checking in at the carrier recommended times anyway so never had any probs.

Yeah I see Aer Lingus are now offering similar prices, well an extra €50 or so, hope Delta don't screw me over or I'll regret not using the Aer Lingus offers! Fingers crossed.

    Just resurrecting this thread,
Looking to go from SNN to BOS in mid-April. I can find €382 return with Continental, which went up from €358 last week
Is the price likely to fluctuate down before rising again? Or anyone know of a better deal?
