Black & white Blu Ray movies on PS3

I have a Blu Ray version of Casino Royale which came with my PS3 bundle. However this movie appears in black and white on my standard TV - i do know that the start of this movie does appear in b&w, however no colour is introduced at all.....

Normal DVDs and all games appear in colour. I have also tried to adjust the Blu Ray settings on the PS3 but to no avail.

    Can anyone help?

    cheers!

I don't think blue-ray will play through a standard cable. I think it only plays in colour through a hi-def cable such as component or HDMI.

Yeah i think its to do with macrovision or what ever its called.

Its used to stop people copying movies to tape and what not.

Saying that I could be totally wrong tho!! :p

AFAIK hdmi can carry encryted signals while normal scart and av cables can't and thats why its in black and white.

Only HDMI and DVI support HDCP (another words DRM) which is needed to play back HD content I think.

Eh...Why would you want to watch them on a standard tv anyway? (unless you got one as a freebie like the OP)

It might be the PS3 is outputting in 60hz and the tv can only accept 50hz.
If this is the case you should be able to sort it by changing the PS3's display settings.

This is a "feature" of HDCP.... Unless you are using a TV that supports HDCP, then the image will be downgraded (b&w or half res or something)

I'm surprised it even works over component... I bet its not 1080p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

It works for me using component as well and my 1080i tv(with 1080p input) accepted it through component at 1080p and was still in colour.Using Black Hawk Down on Blu-Ray disk BTW

That's a pretty retarded statement. Blu-ray films are hi-definition why would you want to watch a high definition film on a standard def TV?

It sounds to me that your TV doesn't support 60Hz mode, NTSC, PAL60 and as such displays in B&W. If you got a 360, all your games would be in B&W as 95% of them support PAL60 only.

As also mentioned if you try to play a Blu-Ray with full RGB cable, not the cable that comes with PS3, it will play with green screen. This is Macrovision copy protection.

Anyway playing Blu-Ray on SDTV is pointless and looks worse IMO. I played my free Spiderman 3 Blu-Ray om my old SDTV and it looked horrible.

Max video resolution through component is 1080i for Blu-Ray playback. If you want the fullHD, 1080p playback you need to use HDMI input.

Didnt notice that, it was set at 1080p generally- i didnt think it needed to downgrade to 1080i for blu-ray.I normally do use hdmi mind, i was only checking to see how quality compares between a digital and analogue cable

    Christ.....

Why on earth would you buy a PS3 to use on a TV that doesnt even output PAL-60??????

Save your money for a decent TV before bothering.

Cause i dont want to fork out over a grand for a tv that will only be using its full potential for plaing games at the moment. Dont really see the point of buying a hd tv just yet, ill wait untill there cheaper and being fully utilised by tv channels first thank you very much.

    Fair enough....

Could get one for well under a grand though,

Under 500 these days for a decent 32"

enjoy the black+white bluray films so!!

u wont see them in colour without a new tv!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

Nah i think i just wont buy a ps3 and ill buy a 360 instead, they have most of the same games anyway but xbox has better online. The blu rey was evening things out for me but not anymore.

And to get a hd tv thats 1080p(and actually looks like it) its surely more than a grand??, ah its beyond the point anyway as i cant afford one anyway haha.

Well BluRay disks have more memory than DVDs, which means some BluRays have more extras on the disk so you may buy a BluRay film for the extras.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

Well the extra storage is beig used up with the extra clarity of the uncompressed video/audio no? All the blu rey boxes iv seen havent mentioned anything bout special features, made me wonder if they even had any?

You don't need a 1080p screen at all. Naturally it's preferable, but lot of PS3 (and X360) games don't even use that resolution particularly well. As for Blu Ray playback, you'll need a very large screen before 720p HD looks bad. Something between a 26 inch and 32 inch 720p screen will be quite affordable and will make whichever of the two consoles you buy look a hell of a lot better than any SD TV. Trust us, once you see the difference you'll never go back. :)

They do. The back catalogue releases should all have the same special features as the DVD equivalent. The new Blu Rays I've seen have all had the usual commentaries, documentaries etc. The new Blade Runner boxed set has mutliple cuts of the film on a smaller number of discs (as in 2 cuts of the film on 1 Blu Ray iirc).

I just got a HDTV 1080i 32 inch and HDMI cable and although games and blue ray especially did look better it certainly wasn't as amazing as it is made out to be and I could easily go back.

Just an FYI 720p is sharper then 1080i, for anyone who has there 1368x768 TV set to 1080i. I find a lot of people don't realise this.

Back to 480 lines? That's the first time I've heard someone say that. Particularly with the games- I spent a week using my PS3 through a Scart lead before I got my HDMI cable and the difference felt rather like when I put my jamjar specs on in the mornings.

I'll keep it that way in future, I did it for a bit in Drake's Fortune because it said 720p on the back.

I don't know why but I really don't see much of a difference from SD when playing Uncharted. I did notice that Casino Royale was very colourful though.
