I didn't know where to post this (Rock or Indy or Other??) feel free to move...

Just a heads up for those interested, a certain Mr. Henry Rollins is bringing his spoken word tour back to Ireland.

He is in Vicar St on 29th Jan - 8.30pm.

Henry's spoken word gigs can be quite entertaining - he has a very erm....unique outlook on current events.

I got my tickets as a Xmas present ....am so looking forward to this gig!!

Not only is he funny but he's also smokin' hot!

I was close enough to drool on him at the last one (in between crying with laughter at the Trans-something or other story) but am sitting a little further back this time ...

    Still CANNOT WAIT!!!

I never saw Rollins spoken word live- I heard 'The black coffee..' c.d., it was funny here and there but I couldn't help think that there were better stand-ups out there; his band however absolutely rule- all of his albums are good but 'Nice' was his best work. Really looking forward to his next band-gig.

Really? I thought Nice was a bit weak, the album anyway as when he played live it was like a sonic piledriver! Never seen his spoken word, tempted to go.

I'd give his stuff a listen John, download something and see do you like it. He's well worth the price of a ticket in my opinion and I am looking forward to seeing what he has in store for us.

As well a ogling him a little from my seat ... :)

Well I know he can spin an entertaining yarn (In the Van is amazing), it's just the price that's making me think twice.

I think he's worth the price of a ticket, I took a friend who wasn't farmiliar with any of his stuff to the last one and she loved it, is coming back with me on the 29th!

If I hadn't promised her my 2nd one already I could have been pursuaded to let you have it ....would have ment sitting next to me tho! :p

He's not a comedian. Yes, he infuses his oratory with a certain amount of humour but that's simply personality shining through. He's not trying to tell jokes he's just emphasising points. You have to approach it from the point of view of, well, Henry Rollins Spoken Word. His thoughts and musings on life as we know it. Better than any interview and utterly watchable. It's rants, raves and after dinner keynote speeches at their best.

Oh, and, yes Zeppie, we get it; you like Henry, sheesh, no need to bring him down to the level of pin-up. "Oh isn't he dreamy?" >sigh< He's not dreamy, he's Henry F**king Rollins, he's a monster! Raaargh!!!

Hoping to see him this time. I'm going to the Dropkick's on the 31 so I think I'll head up the 29th and make a few days of it.

That man is amazing. He gets better each time.

I was dying at the "**** it, paint him black" and Christopher Walken impression.. well actually I was dying through out the whole thing really.

Went last night enjoyed it a lot.
He's not a stand up comedian just talking about his experiences and opinions though a lot of the time they are very funny.
The Christopher Walken bit was the funniest thing I've heard all year.
The travel stuff got a bit repetitive but was interesting.

Some girl got kicked out of left during it didn't hear what was going on, anyone know what that was about?

mmyep i was at it last night too. Great gig. Especially his impersonation of Walken. "this stain.............on my jacket................get it off", "the bathroom...............I need it...............now". Ah bless.

But that girl was sitting two seats on front of me. Her and her mate got up and left (for their own reasons). So she decided to be brave and while making her exit try to talk to Henry while he's on a roll (about some other trip he was going on "meeting the people, getting to know the people, etc"....yeah got a tad repetitive! Didn't bring my buzz down any!). Yeah so she was trying to get his attention and suddenly he started shouting "WHAT WHAT! I HAVE A WOUND HERE WHY DON'T YOU JUST F*CK IT, YOU'RE F*CKING MY WOUND! YOU HAPPY NOW? THIS IS THE REASON WHY MEN BUILD SKYSCRAPERS TO GET AWAY.....(something something something...i can't remember the rest)" she wouldn't go and he had to ask security to come over and just tell her to be on her way. Bit of drama, all in all a good gig.

    very enjoyable. Bloody long too.

The story about the rutts was genuinely touching.

It could have done with an intermission. I was bursting toward the end of it, trying not to laugh to preserve my bladder. Great show though, well worth seeing the monster live.

yeah I was dying for a slash too. Couldn't move though. Was at a table left of center. And kept having to shift in those seats, to alleviate numb-bum.

Christ I was the same. My knees were killing me because there wasn't room to shift my legs...

.....and another thing to mention the amount of people I noticed leaping out of their minds when he started shouting. Amazing! (Yeah yeah, I didn't!.....I swear!)

EDIT: Quick question, does anyone remember the play that he was talking about. The Translators who got f*cked up because of the atrocities they had to speak in first person of the victim or attacker?

Ah, right. Sorry the play that was based on those actual events. It was something like "Lost in Translation" or "Blame the Translators".....er...I know it had the word "Translation" in the title! (Sorry, very random!) Completely forgot the name of it. He said this was on a world tour and if you could catch it, then you should. No one remembers what he was talking about?

This was my first Henry Rollins gig (at the behest of my friend) and I have to say, it was fantastic.

Can anyone recommend some of his stuff on CD or, better yet, DVD? The Spoken Word (i.e. similar to the show the other night) is what I'm looking for. Thanks!

    Hi chin_grin,
The play was called Truth in Translation.

    Folex,
The Boxed Life might be the first port of call if your looking for something similar to what was heard in Vicar Street on Tuesday.
