OK so my nephew got a ps3 for xmas, he got smackdown vs raw with it, when he tries to play this game he gets a message saying that it requires ps3 update version 1.90(i think), problem is he has no broadband.

I have broadband(and a ps3 if it helps) and i would like to know what would be the easiest way to update his console?

download the update and put it on a USB stick, portable hard drive or a memory card , bring it too the PS3 in question and install it , its as easy as that.

I had this come up on two games before and I quit them, thinking I'd have to wait till I get the wifi expanded into the room the ps3 was in. I also thought it was bizarre because they would surely have to warn you on the box that you can't play unless you've an internet connection to update the ps3.

I was right in thinking it was bizarre. Instead of pressing cancel, if you ok the message, it's actually asking you (in a badly phrased way) if you want to install the update. It comes on the game itself.

So there is an option to just click ok and it will fire away?? In fairness i just had a quick glance at it a few days ago so if there is i may have over looked it simply assuming it needed an internet connection....

hmmm, i must have a look, if not ill just try thr memory stick, cheers

One funny thing about the PS3 interface is that sometimes it gives you a message and the only option it shows on screen is to press x to cancel but you can actually press o to continue. That might be the case here ?

I assumed it needed an internet connection too. It's badly phrased.

I think it said something like 'this game needs playstation system software 1.90' and you have just the usual 'ok' and 'cancel' at the bottom. Now I presumed that if you 'ok' you're just acknowledging the message and go back to where you were. My reflex from games makes me cancel these messages, which I did.

It was just pure luck I pressed 'ok' the third time I got it, and to my surprise it told me it was updating the playstation. So, yes, you just confirm or ok the message instead of cancelling.

yes updates do come on games like not everyone these days has broadband and it would be unfair for playstation to only allow updates ver the net
